It seems to me that, it was a book just waiting to be written. The author covers topics very rarely considered in any detail in other books on the Civil War. She helps cut through some of the romantic mysticism and points out reasons why, as we all suspected, that most of the South (especially the poor) were very much victims of the Confederacy. She also explains in greater detail the way of thinking of the Planter class of the Old South, which still exists today--you can even hear it in the speech of the elites of the Deep South today.The problem I had with this book, is that the author repeats herself. Some here have said that they don't understand why people are saying that. Let me paraphrase just a couple examples of what I mean. She says , in one paragraph, that "soldiers wives started to become a political constituency for the first time" and explains how. A paragraph later, she ends the paragraph with "becoming a political entity was something new for poor white soldiers' wives". On the next page it says "for poor soldiers' wives, the Civil War was a huge burden, and they came into their own politically". In three pages she might say, "the term soldiers' wives' began to take on political meaning for the first time". Now, that is not repeating yourself with the same words, exactly. But it is repeating concepts that are not that hard to grasp. The book could have been much shorter and, IMHO, much better. I am not sure why the author feels the need to repeat certain points over and over.Another concept "done to death" was how the Planter class had not considered that a full 1/3 of their population would not only not be soldiers, but also would , in all likelihood, be opposed to them. Now, this would seem obvious to us now, so it is important that she point it out. But once is enough. I hope I am explaining the "repetition problem" a little better here....the topic and concepts were great. Repeating concepts over and over made for, in some places, a very long read.

I am neither a historian or scholar. I found this book redundant during Prof. McCurry's discussion of women's roles prior to and during the civil war. Six chapters could have been three. However, Prof.McCurry discussion of the tension within the Confederacy over the possibility of using slaves as soldiers and the implications of doing so, makes the book very worthwhile.

This is an extremely powerful interpretation of the political forces at play in the Civil War South. Like it or not, Stephanie McCurry delivers a careful exploration of the domestic forces which were occurring during the Civil War in the Confederacy. The result is illuminating and exposes issues with great depth that have been overlooked in the study of the conflict. Much as domestic issues influenced government policies in the United States during the war as well as constantly in US history, domestic issues played an important role in influencing the actions of the Confederate government. Despite the Confederacy being an attempt to create an elite class system of rule, those without a voice in government found a way to be heard partly through their own actions, but also due to the democratic nature of American government. McCurry, the Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania has definitely opened a can of worms with the release of this book. It was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for History in 2011 losing out to Eric Foner’s The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery, itself a great work on the Civil War. Just how important were the actions of women and slaves in the Confederacy during the Civil War? McCurry states that their actions helped drive government policies. Based upon her work as well as others I would say she was correct. Others disagree. I think the thing to consider here is that the Confederacy, despite setting up a government ruled by the elite class of slave owners, was still responsive to the majority of the people inhabiting it. While it was an attempt to create a new nation, it was still required to adhere to some of the principles of the American Revolution. In order to establish the nation, the slave owners were going to have to wage an insurrection and for that they needed the help of the non-slave owners who would compose the majority of its armies. McCurry notes this and shows that this was just the first example of the elites compromising to achieve their goals. No matter what the elites desired, it could only happen with the support of the people in the Confederacy. It would be that support which was critical for the survival of the Confederacy. Without it, the Confederacy had no chance. This is often overlooked. First, many people think the Confederacy enjoyed the support of the people of the slave states. They did not. Of the 15 slave states in 1860, only 11 would join the Confederacy. Of those 11 states, a full third of the white men in them actually opposed secession. From the very beginning, the Confederacy had to deal with an active resistance inside its borders from whites who rejected their authority and slaves who would contribute as little as possible to the Confederate war effort. Later, soldier wives would riot as well as shield deserters. McCurry wrote extensively about these features. Just how much these factors played in the ultimate defeat of the Confederacy is going to be a guess and is open to debate. Did they cause the Confederacy to lose? Not of their own accord, but they did contribute to the defeat of the South over time. There is no doubt that the use of slaves by the Confederate armies was challenged from the very beginning of the war to the final end of it. The facts are undeniable on this matter and McCurry is not the first historian to note this nor will she be the last. The inability of the Confederacy to use its manpower to the maximum capacity was a crippling factor. The issue of slave labor and slave soldiers reflects the deep divisions within the Confederacy and exposes the rotten foundation which the slave owners tried to build their nation upon. All in all I liked the book. As some of the other comments show, the writing style could have been better. She repeated herself in multiple spots. This I think is a reflection of her still emerging writing style. Confederate Reckoning is only her second published book. She has written many articles, but those are different methods of writing compared to books. It takes some time for historians to really find their voice when writing monographs. She does have a Coursera course available, “The History of the Slave South,” which was offered in both 2014 and 2015. I think McCurry does a good job in opening up our eyes to the domestic issues on the Confederate home front. The real question which will be debated is just how much impact they had. I suspect that will be the argument for many.

Love this coloring book. The other adult coloring books are too intricate, and since I do this to relax, not very helpful. Love the black back side of each page which keeps the markers, etc., from bleeding through. There is also another complete set of images in case you mess up or just want to color it again or share with someone.

It was just too basic for the kids but for little ones it is awesome!

but, why ,with all the many, upon many cute animals in this huge universe of ours and they repeat the same animals? I expected a coloring book of a different animal on every single page, not the exact same animal and scene repeated. Why would I or anyone else want to color the same picture over a second time?? Perhaps add a few new artists so no one runs out of ideas. There are way more than only 25 varieties of animals, birds , sea creatures and bugs, many living things more than only 25. No reason we should have to repeat all 25 again. Feeling cheated.

I discovered this author when she won a prize at a watercolor show I attended, and I loved her painting. Found this book on Amazon and glad to have it. Yes, would prefer that it be bigger but, on the other hand, the smaller size makes it handy for me to take along with me to painting class and refer to when I need to. It's full of really masterful watercolor portraits that inspire me, as well as good direction regarding choice of colors, backgrounds, composition, and other topics.

I won't give it 5 stars due to its small size. It gets harder to see and follow the tutorials... I love how the author shows some basic palettes for different skin tones. It is a good book (and I am picky, believe me), just the tiny size of it is a down.

I think this is a good instruction book for watercolor portraits. Covers materials, techniques, and skin tones. Step by step instruction (average 5 to 7 steps). My one complaint about this book is the size. It is 6 1/2 by 9 1/2. Some pages have more than one instructional "step" photo on them, which makes them rather small and not as easy to see the details as you would with a larger format book.

Wonderful artist Peggi Habets tell us how to masterfully paint transformative, translucent portraits in watercolor capturing the essence of personality and character​.

I think this is geared to a painter with some experience, but it is an informative book for someone who is exploring portraiture. Parts are overwhelming, but interesting.

She captures faces and personalities in her portraits. Not just a photo, but an experience. She definitely finds people fascinating.

The book is filled with excellent tips and instruction as to her techniques with various ages of persons and how to approach them.

Excellent book on portraits.

Dear Readers, I am about to build a COM DLL which also uses DCOM library from 3rd party. I read Essential COM, Inside COM, and all stuffs I found on the Internet and MSDN. I can understand piece by piece but I cannot systemmize everything I learned from these sources. All the what, why and how are still scattered every where in this COM world. Until I read this book. I am so glad I found the right book that helps me reconstruct my learning so that I can apply what I have learned. I like the way the author presented the materials. The author linked the subject back and forth in such a way that the understanding grow from page to page. The pictures used plain language but very practical and to the point. This book takes me out of COM confusion. Now I am fully confident in designing the COM DLL assigned to me. I am so happy that I want to share with you all and highly recommend this book. It is not just the materials are so good but the price too. Oh, boy, what a perfect gift for such a price. Thank the author, the publisher, the distributors and those reviewers that lead me to this book.

This is a good book for C++ programmers wanting to learn com. This simplistic one language approach has made the book popular, since com is complicated enough without trying to briefly throw 3 programming languages at it. However, it will never be your only book on Com. Eventually you'll need to use your com objects from ASP or somewhere else (this is the purpose of com, binary reuse). This topic will also require a lot of study, and if your going to write com objects expect to spend a lot of time with this book open. I'm a programmer with 11 years experience. Com is one of the more complicated things I've encountered in my programming career. This book did have a few typo's (3 or 4 jumped out at me), however, they did not detract from the content. My first impression was that Don Box had the best book on Com I'd ever seen (I browsed it in Borders), but this book seemed equally as nice (and a few bucks cheaper).I would have liked to see another another practical example (never enough).Overall, an excellent book.

When I wrote this comment (25012000) all reviewers gave 5 stars to this book, and I did agree with them. I'd like just to add a hint: Essential COM (Don Box) book is better to explain COM, but if you are really new to COM read this Thai's book first (don't forget to read the appendix when you have read 4 first chapters), and then you can read the Essential COM.

This is an excellent book that is aimed at experienced C++ programmers. It is well written, clear, and to the point. The first four chapters cover the basics and lay a solid foundation for what's to come. The author starts the fifth chapter with "While you can actually write complete, functioning server and client components from the material given in the previous chapters, you'll find them very limited." The remainder of the book then provides the details on how to build and use distributed components. I have a number of books on COM/DCOM but this is without a doubt my favorite. I recommend it very highly. If I could own only one COM/DCOM book this would be it.

I didn't not know all I needed to know about come when I started this book, but by the time you get to chapter 6 you are well versed in the principles and concepts of COM and DCOM. The only short fall of this book is that it packs so much information into the first 6 chapters that you don't really see the whole picture until you start writing com objects. And because it is in c++ you start off with a hard language that will make all the others look easy. Get this book you will not be sorry. Makes an incrediblely great reference guide.

If you are going to buy one book on COM/DCOM, this should be it. I recommend it that highly. It contains a clear and concise introduction to all the important COM concepts. I also have Don Box's "Essential COM", but this one is much easier to follow. If you want to quickly come up to speed on COM programming and start writing some code quickly, get this book!

About the Author

Robert Cameron has been a photographer since 1921 when his father gave him a "Brownie" camera and encouraged him to use it. Cameron is now in his 90's and has published 16 of his "Above" books. He was a photographer for the Des Moines Register in the 1930's. Cameron learned the art of aerial photography during World War II, while shooting pictures of militaly installations for the War Department. Cameron is a member of the Royal Photographic Society and a member of the Presidents Council of the International Center of Photography. His work has been exhibited in Paris at La Bibliotheque Historique and the Foundation Mona Bismarck. I enjoyed the book and the photography is dazzling. It is an older book now but it is certainly still worth having. Aerial photography allows you to see "the forest rather than just the trees" as it were. It would have been nice if Cooke has given a fuller description of some of what was visible in the pictures. I guess everyone looks at the city and sees different things to interest them. Summarizing a city as vast as London in a picture book is to provide only a snapshot in time and from one or two person's point of view. Nevertheless it is a great picture book, as are all of Cameron's books.

I have never been to London, but I sure wish I had. When I was a college student oh-so-long-ago, I spent a summer in Germany to practice the language. We flew from New York to Shannon in Ireland, and thence to Frankfurt. England, seen from above, looked only like an immense cloud bank. But after reading and studying this book, I feel I've almost been there!

This may be suitable only for total London geeks like myself, who pore over maps and photos of the best city in the world. It is very satisfying to identify places one has visited, as seen from the air. It goes a little farther afield than I have personally wandered, of course, and reveals warts and all, but for the price this is a very nice addition to any London book collection.

Absolutely beautiful aerial photography. This book is a must for any London fan. Lovely coffee table book.

I used Amazon to buy a gift for friends in England. The Post Office wanted $45 to ship the package. Amazon did it for the cost of the book and approximately $8. Not only was it cheaper to buy from Amazon and let them ship internationally, the package arrived two weeks ahead of the projected arrival time. I strongly support using Amazon for any international shipping of products they carry. This will make Christmas shopping much easier.

Its a HUGE book. I didnt notice the size. But its ok. I still like it. I so enjoy seeing the places I walked and ventures when I visited London.

This publication is in a class by itself. It is London at a very comprehensive aerial glance. It presents a brief pictorial history of the City's architecture and design from Roman London to contemporary London, which is given a very comprehensive focus. It is a wonderful guide that convinced me that I must return to such an historical place.

Wonderful book if you are interested in London particularly if you are a history buff and would like to travel there.
