From the Inside Flap

“Although my portraits capture the likeness of the person or pet I’m painting, I don’t attempt to create portraits that look like photographs. Instead, I let the personality and characteristics of the subject I’m painting guide my decisions. I bring my own style and ideas to the paper using color, brushstroke, and composition to create mood and emotion. My ultimate goal is for the portrait to ‘feel’ like the person as much as it looks like them.” Peggi Habets is an award-winning watercolor portrait artist. Her studio is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her lifelong interest in art and a 15-year career in graphic design and illustration have been the necessary building blocks to her current career as a portrait painter. She was nominated as Pittsburgh Center for the Arts “Emerging Artist of the Year 2008” and her work has been included in “Best of America: Watercolor Artists,” Watercolor Artist magazine, Watercolor Magic magazine, Palette magazine, and the Portrait Society of America’s The Art of The Portrait magazine. Most recently, her painting “The Forest for The Trees” won Best of Show at the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh exhibition at Fallingwater.

I discovered this author when she won a prize at a watercolor show I attended, and I loved her painting. Found this book on Amazon and glad to have it. Yes, would prefer that it be bigger but, on the other hand, the smaller size makes it handy for me to take along with me to painting class and refer to when I need to. It's full of really masterful watercolor portraits that inspire me, as well as good direction regarding choice of colors, backgrounds, composition, and other topics.

I won't give it 5 stars due to its small size. It gets harder to see and follow the tutorials... I love how the author shows some basic palettes for different skin tones. It is a good book (and I am picky, believe me), just the tiny size of it is a down.

I think this is a good instruction book for watercolor portraits. Covers materials, techniques, and skin tones. Step by step instruction (average 5 to 7 steps). My one complaint about this book is the size. It is 6 1/2 by 9 1/2. Some pages have more than one instructional "step" photo on them, which makes them rather small and not as easy to see the details as you would with a larger format book.

Wonderful artist Peggi Habets tell us how to masterfully paint transformative, translucent portraits in watercolor capturing the essence of personality and character.

I think this is geared to a painter with some experience, but it is an informative book for someone who is exploring portraiture. Parts are overwhelming, but interesting.

She captures faces and personalities in her portraits. Not just a photo, but an experience. She definitely finds people fascinating.

The book is filled with excellent tips and instruction as to her techniques with various ages of persons and how to approach them.

Excellent book on portraits.
