Yes it's "out of date" but like everything, cooking evolves. This is a great snapshot of Japan's cooking in the 1960s. The photos and text are sumptuous and fun for those who appreciate history.

It's an old book published by Time/Life but the information is timeless. I have several in the series and love them all.

Book was undamaged but yellowed and dingy. Recipes very complex and ingredients difficult to acquire. Doubt I'll prepare any of them.

This book is now over 40 years old and not easy to come by. It won't be of much interest or use to those simply looking for a good Japanese cookery book as it is very dated and the illustrations are, by more recent standards, very poor. However, those who have a serious passion for Japanese cuisine and cookbooks of all sorts, this will be a great addition to a collection. Compared to many contemporary publications, this book is actually quite good (as was most of the series to which it belongs), but it's interest is mainly historical. There is a lot of supplementary textual information that is a bit dated now and it it is interesting to read some recipes for appetizers that appear to have been fashionable at one time but which seem to have fallen out of fashion. I am very pleased to have this book in my collection.

My mother received this cookbook as a gift around 1970, and it now belongs to me. It was my first introduction to the beauty of Japanese cooking. Somewhat outdated now, it is still a nice choice for those interested in the cultural history of Japanese cuisine. The photographs are beautiful, befitting a Time/Life publication. I don't often refer to the book for recipes, having a number of more recent Japanese cookbooks, but I do enjoy reading the text.

Simplistic and sweet holiday pictures that are perfect for children of all ages. I like the fact that you can print these out yourself and choose to use cardstock or regular paper. They come with lots of different pictures, and all are appropriate. Regarding one reviewers mention "Half naked" people, there is one photo where a Native American dies not have a top on. Which would make a great conversation to have about what everyone wore during the very first Thanksgiving ( it's not like they drew nipples on them or anything like that!). Love that despite the fact that this is a preview, there are plenty of different pictures to keep kids busy. I'm thinking of laminating and using as placemats at the children's table with dry erase markers to keep little hands busy before the big meal! And you can't do better than FREE!

A personal experience of growing up with the devastating impact of British colonialism in Kenya. The main character allows you into his personal life, feelings, hopes, dreams, sadness and trauma.

The book is an easy read. We read it for class. It's a short story about a boy growing up in Kenya. A lot of sad things happen to him but he is always optimistic... That is, until the end.

If ever you want to understand African culture, and survival. It was a hard book to read, sad and interesting. A must read!!!

Ngugi story Weep Not Child presented a story of conflict, determination and disappointment. Great story that keeps your imagination of a village in a distant land but you could see it, feel its struggles and the characters dispositions as the story was told. Great book and great author.

This is the author's second book am reading. I had read the River Between in high school. I'm glad that on this second reading I am more appreciative of his work.Set in the background of pre-independence Kenya, this is indeed precious literature. You're more likely to hear myths and unfounded stories than come across a book written in the 1950s and 1960s - by an African writer.The author narrates the novel around political violence, colonialism, adolescence and an implied love story. What I found most interesting though is stories of how families participated in the rebellion against colonialism, particularly the Mau Mau uprising. History is structured in a way that shines more light on heroes such as Jomo Kenyatta, but while they gave the face to the struggle, these families did most of the groundwork. They paved the way for African independence, and their stories deserve as much attention.I applaud the author for trying to use African language for a good part of the book. We may have a wider base of readers when African literature is written in English, but we may also end up losing many of our languages while doing so. And I doubt that some African stories, proverbs and songs have an English translation at all.I look forward to reading more of Ngugi wa Thiong'o's books in the near future.

Had to read it for class... Good book though

Like many of Wa Thiong'o's books, this novel deals with the question of Kenyan Independence and the Mau-Mau. But unlike "a grain of wheat", this conflict is not the theme of the novel, but the backdrop.The story itself centres around a family that has lost its land to the colonial settlers, a psychological portrait of how the farmer, the soldier and the child deals with the changing world around them. Crucial to the book is the child Njoroge, a schoolboy whose thirst for education and diligent Bible study blends into an almost Messianic vision, a vision that shines the brightest when the conflict around him is at its peak. A conflict, it is revealed, he cannot escape...It is this Icarus motif, coupled with the Romeo and Juliet-like love story that accompanies it, that reveals the complexity of the author. A post-colonial writer? By most definitions, yes. But also a man that knows the subtlety of the human soul.

This book brought tears to my eyes.

***THIS BOOK WAS RECEIVED FROM A GOODREADS GIVEAWAY***Once again, I seem to have jumped in on the second book of a series. Fortunately, there was plenty of exposition detailing the events of The Super Life of Ben Braver. Maybe a little too much exposition. This sequel took a little long getting to its own story because of this, along with a bit of heavy-handed foreshadowing as well. Regardless of its slow start, Ben Braver and the Incredible Exploding Kid is a pretty standard middle-grade book that calls upon the success of the superhero genre to package a lesson about pride between action set pieces.While there are some parallels between the X-Men series, I feel the main character’s arc is perhaps a little more similar to early My Hero Academia. Plus, it wouldn’t be a middle-grade story without a bit of a Harry Potter feel to it as well (i.e., a unique main character with a semi-bumbling male friend and an incredibly smart female friend). At the very least, I found the illustrations sprinkled throughout to be well done. They certainly contributed to the comic book hybrid feel of the story, which is probably what draws the X-Men comparisons.I won’t fault this book too much for its heavy-handed approach toward the main character’s social faux pas since this book is basically for children. That being said, I did find some of the lore and intricacies of the greater story arc to be perhaps a little elaborate. I’m sure if I’d read the first book, this would be less so, but it still seems slightly overcomplicated at times. In the end, I liked some of the unique (if not sometimes gross) superpowers of these kids, and I’d recommend this series for any children who might want to make the jump from comic books to chapter books, and vice versa.A comic book/chapter book hybrid with a semi-standard take on superheroes, I give Ben Braver and the Incredible Exploding Kid 3.5 stars out of 5.

It's a simple 100 page read that is easy to refer back to as you type emails or follow up with calls. This can be read in a matter of hours and put into effect the next day. Great for Realtors as well as mortgage lenders.

Email marketing is one of the most effective ways to keep in touch with your database if you do it right. If you are thinking about buying this book, chances are you aren’t doing it as well as you could, much like me.I will be implementing so many concepts from this book that it is worth 10x the amount I spent on it.Thank you Steve!

Good ideas for sending out emails, however I think the same concept can be applied to social media and blogging. Either case, the content in this book is valuable for creating copy that doesn't push sales, but engages your audience on different topics other than real estate. Very creative.

I was able to pick up a copy of Kill Cold Calls by Steve Jolly at the Real Estate Distilled conference in January of 2018. I recently did some traveling which gave me the opportunity to read the book on the plane. My total reading time for the book was probably about 3 hours. It was a pretty quick read. Steve does a good job of laying out a framework for communicating with sales prospects in a manner that treats people like people. The book includes real world examples that Steve has successfully used in his own business. I appreciated that the book wasn't full of just theory, but included real world examples. I'm looking forward to applying the principles in the book to my future emails!

I'm in love with these books. We educate our children and use an older method called Charlotte Mason. For identification, these are some of the best tools to have. Now, they could be 'smaller' but then you'd lose the fantastic pages in the middle w/ photos!

I love this series of guides and have a number of them, but this one was a little disappointing. At first, it seemed great as it covers a large number of types of bugs- flies, fleas, ticks, spiders, butterflies, moths, caterpillars, beetles, grasshoppers, mayflies, bees and more. However, due to the large number of types covered, there are not a lot of species identified per type. Could not find the two most common spiders around our Pennsylvania farm, and keep finding that issue reoccurring. Would have preferred this was 2 (maybe more) separate books so more species could be covered in detail, it's just too broad a topic for a single guide book. Still very user-friendly and informative with full color pictures nicely organized in front, and detailed information about habitat, range, life cycle and more in the back.

I like this book a lot, I do find that it is lacking so many insects that it isn't all that useful though. I realize there are so many it would be hard to document them all, but the book fell short of my expectations.

There are many many insects out there; it is unlikely that any one book covers them all. I ordered this book without thinking about the fact that the insect population in "North America" and the insect population in New England (where I live) might be very different. I now have a very nice book that contains only two sentences about the Eastern Carpenter Bee and nothing specific about winter moths, both of which are prevalent in New England. I have now ordered another book that claims to be specific to New England. Caveat emptor....

This book has a ton of stuff in it and lots of pics. But my kids and I have a hard time finding most bugs. I wish they had the male and female pics of each bug as well as any other variations. The kids get so excited when they find a bug but its disappointing when we try to look it up. We end up googling it and figure out what they are that way. I wish the pictures said if it was poisonous or if it would bite, rather than having to read in the back. Even then when you read about the bug sometimes it doesn't say. It should say either way.

This has been extremely helpful for identifying the insects encountered. I enjoy photography, and taking a photo of an interesting insect is fun, but I really like knowing what it is that I found. This has in almost every instance resulted in finding the desired identity.I don't carry it with me, but it looks durable enough to be put in my camera bag and have it survive a lot of handling. This past summer I was fortunate to encounter a brood of Periodical Cicadas. The book clearly shows them and explains the 13 - 17 year appearance. The book did not mention the commonly heard name of Red Eyed Cicada. Perhaps that common name is only a regional thing.

A guide to insects and spiders of North America would have to be very large, and this guide is not. I was disappointed to find too that it only highlighted the most interesting-looking species and the most well-known, i felt that easily recognizable species were unnecessary to display because I needed to identify a little brown spider, and could not. I will keep it as a fun book for my young daughter, but as far as a guide, it's not much of one.

This was a gift for my 6 year old who is newly quizzical about insects. Cover was torn and unpresentable as a gift, even to a 6 year old. I wanted him to build a library of books and for this to be a legacy gift as the first in a collection.
