A great primer for volunteering at hospice using music therapy ... Excellent chapters by a variety of therapists in different settings.

Anybody who is involoved with palliative care should read this book. I'm a music therapy intern student working with cancer patients and this book gave me good insights and new perspectives on practicing music therapy with people who are in palliative care. This book illustrates pracitce of music therapy in Europe and Australia but practiced models are very similar to ones in U.S. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know the power of music in helping with people who are dying.

I gave this book a one because all the exercises can be found in the Peace Corp cross-cultural manual called "Culture Matters." I was disappointed that all the exercises were not new but taken straight from Culture Matters.

There are many cross-cultural books out there; some are theoretical & some are practical. This is the latter, encouraging readers to think through scenarios & look at multiple sides. I will use in teaching intercultural communication I workshops & at undergrad & graduate levels.

This book is a must for everyone. It gives very clear categories of cultural difference with graphs and pictures to help understand differences.I have found it useful when I interact with other cultures from Alabama to China, hear about international news events, and even recognizing my own cultural influences.

I am using this book in my class on cross-cultural communication, using the exercises as practical implementation of the principles that I am teaching. My students have responded very well. Mr. Sorti has constructed a programmed teaching approach that builds logically, with great insight.

I was dubious about this book, but it was actually kind of fun to work through. I had to get it for a graduate school class, and the scenarios were interesting to read, and the "quiz" sections were fun to do to see where I placed on the spectrums discussed in the book. It was interesting to see how other cultures rated too, in comparison to me and the country I'm in.

This is a very good introduction to cross cultural relationships and ministries. Reminded of my bachelors degree in sociology. Good book to read for missionaries and cross cultural workers

I was not in love with the workbook format. I found it a bit tedious, but the insights were so helpful it was worth it. Perhaps the questions did help me integrate the information better, hard to tell. Just really wish I had read the book 15 years ago before I began going to Asia with some frequency.

About the Author

Theresa L. White is a professor of Psychology at Le Moyne College and an adjunct associate professor in Neuroscience and Physiology at SUNY Upstate Medical University. She received her undergraduate degree in psychology from Boise State University. Both of her higher degrees in experimental psychology are from English universities; her Masters of Science degree is from Oxford University (New College) and her PhD is from the University of Warwick. Dr. White's research is concerned with cognitive aspects of olfaction, or the way that people think about smells and flavors. She currently teaches Research Methods, Sensation and Perception, and Brain and Behavior. Dr. White lives in Syracuse, New York, where winters sometimes bring more than 180 inches of snow. There something wonderful about past editions. Small changes between texts. Often the chapters and content will remain the same with only minor changes to the examples given in the book.The book that I would have purchased at the bookstore would likely have been $100+, but I purchased this from Amazon for a mere $11. That impresses me. What impresses me more is the Research Methods lecture doesn't deviate from the 7th edition text. I saved upwards of $85 and get the exact same result as other students. If this is a new concept to some of you college students take advantage of your new knowledge. However, I have to caution you: some classes require the new text because of the constant change within the field. Remember that. What's true in Speech-Language Pathology this year may be altered next year.

I have followed Dr. Leavy's work very closely over the years and learned so much about my own processes and the qualtitative research process from her. Research Design was like a GIFT. Right now it is a constant companion, which I imagine it will be for a long time. The language is so clear and concise. In addition all eight chapters are so thoroughly fleshed out , one will be able to both conceptualize and begin to plan the research effortlessly. One thing I absolutely love about this book is the way in which she opens the first chapter---Introduction to Social Research with "Different Ways of Knowing". Dr. Leavy is one of those rare writers/researchers/human beings who fully embrace the different ways in which we all come to knowledge. This book most definitely embraces the individual and varied processes of research and Dr. Leavy is an absolutely excellent guide to have along the way!

I am still reading this amazing book, but I perceive Dr. Patricia Leavy is not only reaching the minds of her readers but their hearts too.As an interedisciplinary doctorate student focusing on using collaborative painting as the method for inquiry, in marginalized communities at the border region of the United States and Mexico, Arts-Based and Community-based Participatory Research approaches's chapters are openning interesting and important possibilities to consider, in my near future career, as an artist, researcher.There are few books related to Research Design and Arts-Based and Community-Based Participatory Research approaches, and for me Dr. Leavy's book has been providing me "light at the end of the tunnel," and for this I am very grateful.

I am a big fan of Dr. Leavy's work in arts-based research and social fictions. In this text Leavy provides an accessible introductory text to research methods that students will benefit from. Leavy provides a needed addition to the field by examining research methods from qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods, as well as arts-based and community-based participative approaches. These last two are often marginalized in the field of research methodology, yet are crucial to understanding our world and needed contextualization of all research. I highly recommend this text for graduate students and those who wish to improve their data literacy for continuous improvement in their contexts.

Got my copy of Research Design and went through it this morning. Hear me now and believe me later: It's an absolute pedagogical gem! After decades of teaching social science methods to undergrads and graduate students (before I retired) and making new efforts along the way to assemble the right combination of texts and supplementary materials, Leavy's text solves the problem. It's a whole course in itself, up to date on areas such as arts-based research and more, without sacrificing basics on philosophy, quantitative methods, hypothesis formation, and so on. Faculty will love it for its critical genius and comprehensive coverage. Students will love the exceptionally clear writing and reasoning with real world examples throughout. Leavy's "review stops" outshine anything personal note takers can do on their own. No Cliff's Notes needed here. I've got two super smart granddaughters headed for college in the next couple of years. One will be going into pre-med. Wouldn't think of letting her leave the house without a copy of this book in her backpack (or laptop). For its transferable values on critical thinking, let alone basic research design, it ought to be required reading throughout the disciplines. Congrats, Patricia!
