Bought 4 Intro to ARCH class, author is very knowledgeable & educated in the field and informative of the pros and cons of the architectural field. The author is very articulate, but if you have dreams of becoming an architect.....don't read this book. Most lofty ideas will be squashed in the first couple of chapters, but it is true to reality!

With Tias Little's deep understanding of the human body and deep human connection to chakra's, my understanding of where my body was struggling was provided light. Doing just a few techniques in the book, I have broken through my plateau and I no longer see restrictions, only possibilities.

An incredible and insightful look into the mystery that is the interior of the human body, weaving together yoga practice, science, mythology, anatomy and Chakra theory. I absolutely love the focus on the Chakras being around the nerve plexuses, physical structures inside the body and how they relate to yoga. This book made the subtle body and chakras more real and tangible for me, whereas many books on the subject focus on the mystical energy system and feel un-grounded and unrelatable to normal people and teaching a regular yoga class.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Chakras and the subtle body but feels the current popular knowledge on the subject is too philosophical (or difficult to relate to in a realistic sense). The insights in this books help connect lofty mystical theory, with the physical elements of the body and into the moving meditation that is your yoga practice.Would Highly Recommend.

As a beginner it's very informative but a bit over my head. I wish there were more illustrations. Some of the poses take 2 paragraphs to describe - a pic would help!

This was a wonderfully insightful book. I would say that it is most suited for those who already have some working background on the topics, it wasn't written for the very beginner of yoga. I read it to supplement my yoga teacher training. It is well organized and researched. And while it is not a long book nor a difficult read, I certainly took my time reading it (20 or so pages at a time) since there is just so much information per page (not a wasted word). Little makes the most fantastic connections over and over in this book.

I was truly blessed to study with Tias and his wife, Surya, at their studio in Santa Fe for three years. As my own yoga teaching career has grown, the wisdom they gave me has been a daily source of inspiration. I have often wished I could go back for a refresher, and after reading this book I feel as though I have. It is a true godsend. Tias manages to present deep spiritual and physical insight with good humor and easily understood symbology. He distills information from texts that are much more difficult to penetrate and combines it with his own invaluable observations. The result is both dense with data and highly accessible. Whether you are a seasoned instructor, a dedicated yogi, or a novice looking for a path to self-healing, this book is a must-read.

This is a very difficult read for the average non-yogi yoga practitioner. At least I found it so.

This book is filled with inner wisdom and knowledge expressed colorfully and poetically as Tias Little has the unique way of doing in his teachings. It is a guide into the depth of the energetic and physical body, mind and breath. I highly recommend this book for teachers and students of yoga who want to deepen their practice and understanding of alignment and awareness of body, mind, and spirit.

Excellent book. I truly learned alot

Great book... Was recommended as useful read by a friend and it was difficult to put it down. It's meant not just for athletes but for anyone who aspires to have any kind of goal related to their physical performance. As a physician, I learned lessons for self improvement not only for myself but for my patients too. I specially liked the section about different exercises and workout and about dietary changes. The book has easy writing style and the author has broken down complicated concepts to make it adaptable to the common lifestyle. Loved it!

What a great tool...Dr. Rao covers so many important concepts important not only to the athlete's performance, but also the athlete's overall mental, physical and spiritual well-being. Plus, he's a sports med doc and knows the ins and outs of athletic injuries and their prevention. It doesn't matter if you're a high level athlete or a weekend warrior, you need to have this in your library!!!!

I luv luv luv this book. I'm a beginning athlete that wants a comprehensive way of healthy life. I'm ecstatic that the book includes tips on injury prevention and nutritional advice as well. This is a smaller sized version of several highly illustrated editions of pirate books, and textually wise, better than some. There is a big book out there "A World Wide Illustrated History: PIRATES -- Terror on the High Seas from the Caribbean to the South China Sea", also edited by David Cordingly; that one is much larger, even better illustrated, but the test leaves something to be desired. This one is smaller, thiner, but also with fine visuals, but also a better textual treatment of the subject. I like both of these books, but prefer this one for the reading, and the other for the looking. Get both, if you can find them cheap enough. This volume does go a bit deeper into the subject matter than some others and may be one of the better basic studies. Read A General History of Pirates by Capt. Charles Johnson (1724) for the standard version of the stories of individual pirates (reading books 300 years old can be a little bit of a challenge, but you get used to it).The contents of this book provide a history of piracy from ancient times to the present and cover a wide variety of topics. One herein will learn of piracy in the Middle Ages and the development of the corsairs of North Africa. It gives a thorough picture of the whole spectrum of activities along the Spanish Main from the earliest days onward, and does not concentrate on the so-called "Golden Age". There is further a chapter on piracy in the South China Sea. The book features good maps in addition to the other copious illustrations. This book is also somewhat devoid of the sensationalism which many of the earlier works provided, and one does not get a lot of the "pirates as a cultural phenomena" stuff. This a a good, solid, overall history of the sea robbers as the real things.

This is a wonderfully written book which is a history of piracy from its roots in ancient Egypt right up to the present day. The book not only discusses the "Golden Age of Piracy" when Morgan, Blackbeard and Captain Kidd plied their trade in the Caribbean, but it also covers the extensive pirate activity in the ancient world as well as its modern manifestation. The links between the breakdown of social order or a political power vacuum and its effects on the rise of piracy during various historical ages are addressed as is the centuries long pirate conflict between Islam and Christendom during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. This is a well written historical work and the pirates are portrayed as the frequently ruthless and bloodthirsty men (and some women) they were rather than as the charming rogues of so many Hollywood motion pictures. The book is also full of detailed full color maps and pictures relating to piracy which both ably supplements the text as well as being esthetically pleasing in their own right. The principle author Angus Konstam was a commentator on a recent History Channel documentary on piracy and his in-depth knowledge of the subject makes this book enjoyable by both a serious student of the subject as well as the newly interested reader. In these days of "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies and the "Pirate Master" reality show this book is a welcome dose of historical fact into a subject which has been long been dominated by romantic fantasies

This is a great book to anyone interested on this period and in piracy.Angus Konstam's text is both concise and accurate,while Angus McBride's illustrations are certainly some of the best I have ever seen.The book is mostly about British pirates which should be expected,since Osprey is from Great Britain,and British sailors were always inclined towards piratical activities.The sections on pirate warfare and pirate codes are particularly nice,and you get biographies on such pirates as Blackbeard and Captain Kidd as well.The only thing I miss is a color cut-away illustration of a pirate ship.Even though,I must say It's an A+ job from front to back cover.

Time is a tricky thing to deal with theologically. There are elements of repetition, and elements of once-only. In our church experience, we look back on the once-only kinds of events (both historical and revelatory) through a cyclical pattern that has varying spans; perhaps the most significant is that of the church year, which follows the progress of the seasons, allowing for variation, but also adding stability to the way in which we as a community approach God and the narratives surrounding God's action in the world.As Vicki Black states, there are two primary cycles in the church year. The first is the Advent-Christmas-Epiphany cycle, and the second is the Lent-Easter-Pentecost cycle. Traditionally, the church year is said to begin at the first Sunday of Advent. This day is always the fourth Sunday before Christmas; while Christmas is always December 25, the variability in the calendar means that the actual date for the beginning of Advent changes from year to year. This cycle continues through the Epiphany, after which 'ordinary' time takes place until the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday. ('Ordinary' time refers to the fact that these weeks are numbered with ordinal numbers - second Sunday after Epiphany, etc., and not to the fact that they are outside any of the greater seasons of the church.)Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, which falls on different dates in different years, dependent upon the date of Easter. Unlike Christmas, which is fixed on the calendar (which is the Roman solar calendar still in primary use in the world), Easter shifts from year to year, as it is pegged to the Jewish celebration of the Passover, which is governed by a lunar calendar. Lent lasts for 40 days (exclusive of Sundays) until Easter. Holy Week is technically a part of Lent, but has different colours and aspects as things go up to Easter; the Easter season continues until the feast of the Pentecost 50 days later, at which time the church goes into the second, longer period of 'ordinary' time, until the advent of the next Advent season.Black discusses each of these six elements (Advent-Christmas-Epiphany and Lent-Easter-Pentecost) in separate chapters, along with a special chapter on Holy Week, and an introductory chapter. Black's development is personal, in that she discusses how she incorporates this into her family with her husband and son; she also allows for variations of practice in different parishes and dioceses. There is a minimum of technical language here - the text is very accessible, yet doesn't 'talk down' to the reader. It is both engaging and inviting.The book can be used by a discussion group at the church - despite the division into eight chapters, it could easily be used as a Lenten discussion book or for an inquirer's class to learn aspects of the church year. There are potential discussion questions listed at the back of each chapter. The book itself is rather short and easily read in a short time, but can be useful as a reference throughout the year, too.This is part of a series by Morehouse Press, which also includes 'Welcome to the Book of Common Prayer' (also by Vicki Black), 'Welcome to Sunday' and 'Welcome to the Episcopal Church' (both by Christopher Webber). All of these books are great as introductions to the ways (sometimes mysterious) Episcopalians do things in church - useful for newcomers as well as life-long members who might never have learned the 'why' behind what the church does.

All the Welcome to series are excellent, and I have purchased them. I have rated them 5 stars since they have "earned that designation" for me. I have, until recently, been a hit and miss Episcopalian so these books have really helped me to become comfortable and much more knowledgable. Well worth the money, for sure.
