Review

“Achingly effective.” —Booklist, Starred Review“Is Hemingway’s Paris ambitious? Yes. Does it work? Absolutely.” —The Huffington Post“By showing us the Paris that Hemingway saw, walked through, and loved, Robert Wheeler gives us a more complete picture than we have had of this legendary and complicated American writer." —Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and Director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University“This book evokes not only the beauty of Paris but especially of Hemingway’s remembrance of the early Paris years and his formation as a modernist writer. The exquisite photography and the evocative beauty of the prose bring out the very best of what Paris has to offer: past, present, and, forever, the future. Read this book and savor Hemingway’s city.” —James Meredith, President, The Ernest Hemingway Foundation and Society“Wheeler's photographs of Hemingway's Paris are a gritty illustration of what Perkins saw in Hemingway's writing.” —Jenny Phillips, grand-daughter of Hemingway’s longtime editor, Maxwell Perkins“In this photographic tribute to Ernest Hemingway, Robert Wheeler uses his unerring eye and masterly vision to bring us Paris, city of literature and romance, in a unique and charming way. Inspired by A Moveable Feast, the crisp black-and-white images and accompanying narrative give us an original insight into both beloved city and renowned author. A delightful experience!” —Valerie Hemingway, Author of Running with the Bulls: My Years with the Hemingways“If you’re interested in Hemingway or Paris, this book is a must read.” —Sun Also Rises (Blog)

There is probably a perception that Hemingway's Paris: A Writer's City in Words and Images, would be most appropriate for people who are interested in either Ernest Hemingway, Paris, or both, but I found another use for it. I was in Paris for ten days this past April and in spite of its heft I used it as a guidebook. While sipping a Lillet at Les Deux Magots I read about Hemingway stopping there and looked at the accompanying photo. (pgs 26-27). While sitting at one of the cafes on the Place Contrascarpe, I read about Ernest and Hadley's first apartment just around the corner (pgs 126 - 127) And a highlight was having dinner on the last night at the Closserie des Lilas and looking at the photos on pages 79 and 87, for example. I even showed them to the maître d' who was greatly impressed. You can join Ernest and Hadley in Paris through this book, but to take it there and almost reunite the photos with the places they show was a special treat.

The hardcover version is quite a disappointment compared to the softcover copy I almost purchased at my local bookstore. I thought the high quality, glossy photos that I previewed in the softcover edition would merit paying more to own as a hardcover "keeper" for my home bookshelf. My bookstore only carried the softcover, so I was happy to find a hard-bound edition offered on Amazon for only a few dollars more. However the photos in the hardcover version I received (printed in USA) were grainy, low resolution, poor white balance and contrast, and printed on thin recycled-quality paper. Even the text is grainy and the whole feel is that it was photocopied on a low resolution inkjet. Fair warning to anyone else who expects art-quality photos in the hardcover version of what is an otherwise enjoyable collection of photo essays of black&white Paris. Will return and replace.

I checked this book out at my local library. I instantly fell in love with the glossy pages and beautiful pictures. I decided to order a copy for myself. Upon receiving my book, the pages were not glossy they were matte. Some of the pictures have streaks and lines going through them. The worst part is that the pages are so thin that they are almost see through. I can turn the page and still be able to see the previous page.

This extraordinary book reminds me of the reasons I return to Paris again and again. Seeing his beautiful pictures through Hemingway's haunts only makes it more poignant. It is a treasure for anyone who loves Paris or Hemingway. For those of us whose lives have been enriched by both will certainly find an honored place in our library for Wheeler's contribution to our valued books about Paris and Hemingway!

Robert Wheeler's evocation of Hemingway's Paris in beautiful words and stunning pictures makes me want to revisit Paris to see everything through Hemingway's eyes. However, this book is just as rewarding for the armchair traveler. What a treat for everyone who loves beautiful photographs of one of the world's most beautiful cities! I particularly like the map to facilitate mentally following in Hemingway's footsteps. I was privileged to visit Paris with Robert, but his photographs capture far more than I saw by myself, and his words bring Hemingway alive again.

I love Hemingway and have followed his trail all over - Key West, Cuba, Paris, Spain, etc. My wife and I had just spent a month in Paris and I saw this book at Shakespeare and Company and had to have it. If you've ever read "A Moveable Feast", this basically follows that book on Hemingway's time in Paris. Beautiful pictures and beautiful writing.

I was captivated by the depth of feeling expressed by Robert Wheeler in presenting Hemingway's inspiration, craft, influence, and love of Hadley as he experienced life during his Paris years. The beautiful photography adds to, personalizes, and creates an introspective and sensitive look at and understanding of both Hemingway the person and Hemingway the gifted writer. You'll treasure and enjoy this marvelous insight into Hemingway that Robert Wheeler has created in his writings.

Robert Wheeler's Hemingway's Paris: A Writer's City in Words and Images is a rare, concise exploration into one of the world's preeminent twentieth century authors. Through superb black and white photographs, accompanied by beautiful prose, Wheeler encourages both the casual reader or the literary enthusiast to quest for more of Hemingway's writings, especially his early work in 1920's Paris with his first wife and love, Hadley. This book is truly a high quality work of literary art worthy of the great man it depicts!
