Review

"Talia and the Haman-tushies by Linda Elovitz Marshall (Kar-Ben, £6.50). Talia mishears her and thinks edible posteriors are on the menu - yuck! (Parents, be prepared to translate the joke.) As they cook, Grandma tells the Purim story, which is folded into the baking activities as smoothly as sugar into margarine. Francesca Assirelli's illustrations are a joy, especially Grandma, beaming so roundly that the bridge of her specs is stretched to a foot long. Luckily, the tushie misunderstanding is cleared up in time for Talia to taste the hamantaschen. Giggles guaranteed for ages three to five."--The Jewish Chronicle--Newspaper"In this next installment in this picture book series about misheard words and Jewish life, Talia visits her Grandma around Purim time, and Grandma tells her the story of Purim while they make Hamantaschen together. Talia thinks Grandma has called them 'Haman-tushies, ' which she plans never to eat because they sound so yucky. Much to her relief, Grandma sets her straight in the end, explaining that they really are 'Haman's pockets, ' and Talia and her grandmother then enjoy the delicious cookies together. Grandma's version of the Purim story is very simple, leaving out all the potentially unpleasant parts about Queen Vashti and about how Haman was hanged in the end. The meaning of the story comes through though, and this version would be appropriate for children ages 4 to 8. The illustrations, which appear to have been made from paintings, are clear with a cheerful palette and make the story easy to follow for young children. There is also a recipe for Hamantaschen at the end, which would be a great follow-through activity for young readers and their adult companions."--Jewish Book Council --Website

I ordered this book for my granddaughter, and it was just delivered. It looks adorable and I am sure she will love it. The problem is in the shipping. It is a soft cover book and although the book was obviously shipped flat; it was shipped in a soft pack without cardboard or anything so the entire package was folded in half. There is a crease in the book. Before giving it to my granddaughter, I am going to try to flatten it out by sticking a ton of other things on top to weigh it down. I am just surprised it was shipped so carelessly.

Nice book for the classroom!

Very cute book kids loved it !

When Talia visits her grandmother, she is asked to help make Hamantaschen, special cookies for Purim. This doesn’t sound very tasty to Talia and she calls the cookies Haman-tushies. While preparing the cookies, Talia learns the story of Purim. Of course, Talia had lots of questions and she learned so much from her grandmother. Do you think Talia will at least try a Hamantaschen? The Jewish holiday Purim is celebrated on March 12th. It is a celebration of Queen Esther who saved the Jewish people from Haman’s plot to destroy them. Readers will be enlightened by this story and learn about Jewish culture. Expressive illustrations invite readers to share in the history of the holiday. Simple sentence structure help beginners gain confidence in their reading skills. The back pages share a special recipe for readers to try at home.

The trees on the farm were just starting to blossom and it was time for Talia to visit Grandma. The snow was gone, the grass was green and “Purim was coming.” Grandma got out her cookbook and turned to the recipe for Hamantaschen, “special cookies for Purim.” Talia put her hand on her chin and looked over at Grandma with amazement. “Haman-tushies?” she thought. “YUCK! What kind of cookie was that?” Certainly not anything fit for little girls to eat. No way!Grandma began to mix up the ingredients for those Haman-tushies and began to tell Talia “the story of Purim.” It all began in “the city of Shusan in faraway Persia” when King Ahashuerus was thinking of getting married. Of course being a king, he had his choice from “all the young women from his kingdom.” The woman he selected was “Esther, a Jewish girl who was brave, smart, and beautiful,” whom he quickly fell in love with and married.Talia was surprised that the Queen of Persia was Jewish and after gathering fillings for those Haman-tushies, Grandma continued. To make a long story short, there was some “plotting against the king” and Queen Esther relayed the information to King Ahashuerus. The cookie making continued as did the story. There was Mordechai and the king’s prime minister, “a proud, wicked man named Haman.” There was going to be trouble in the kingdom and Queen Esther could perish at the hands of Haman. Would he hurt the Jewish people and more importantly, would Talia have to eat those yucky Haman-tushies?This is a fun, humorous tale about the story of Purim and Hamantaschen that will make little ones laugh. Of course Talia misunderstood what Grandma said and certainly wasn’t going to eat anything in the tushie line. This alone will make the young audience laugh because they’ll certainly know that there’s no such thing as Haman-tushies. This is certainly a very unique way to introduce the story of Purim to very young children. As Grandma works, the tale alternates between her relaying the Purim story to Talia as they make the Haman-tushies. I definitely loved this delightful tale! In the back of the book is a recipe for Talia’s Haman-Tushies, a recipe that grandmas everywhere can make with their loved ones.LINDA ELOVITZ MARSHALL:Rainbow WeaverShh ... Shh .. While the 'haman-tushies' are prepared, Talia is told by the Grandma the history of the Purim holiday. I loved how the layers of the story of the Queen Esther and her mission to save the Jewish people are intervowen with bits of directions for preparing the famous staple cookies of the holiday. It is aimed for ages 3 to 8, being beautifully told, accompanied by simple and colourful illustrations. For the parents or grandparents, a recipe of tha 'haman-tushies' is included, an opportunity that can be used for keeping the children busy with the preparations while telling again and again the story of the Purim holiday. A recommended read, especially around this joyous festival.Disclaimer: Book offered by the publisher
