Review
“A lot of athletes have been to the mountaintop and back to the bottom in the course of their careers, and their stories end there. But not Jay’s. He was determined to build a life beyond basketball no matter how many hard picks he’d have to fight through.” (Charles Barkley, TNT baseball analyst and NBA legend)“From a freakish motorcycle accident that derailed his destiny to overcoming the residue from it that left a severe mental and emotional stain, Jay’s story is about strength, resilience, and redemption. Life Is Not an Accident is a surprisingly honest and revealing account that will inspire and resonate with all.” (Grant Hill, CBS basketball analyst and former NBA All-Pro)“Jay Williams has led a fascinating life, much of it in the public eye. But it is the very private side of the man— through his breathtaking highs and startling lows—that makes this gutsy, intimate, unflinchingly honest memoir impossible to put down.” (Mike Greenberg, ESPN's Mike & Mike)“An amazingly courageous and inspirational book.” (Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys Quarterback)

From the Back Cover
As a kid, Jay Williams pretended he was making the game-winning shot while playing basketball in his backyard. He kept right on making shots until he became an NCAA champion and two-time national player of the year at Duke, and the second overall NBA draft pick in 2002.But after just one season with the Chicago Bulls, Williams’s basketball playing career ended after a horrific motorcycle accident. In an instant, the man with as fast a first step as any point guard in the history of basketball could no longer do anything for himself, including walk.In Life Is Not an Accident, Jay Williams shares his story of being a young man trying to wrest control of his life from his overinvolved parents, from the pleasures and perils of fame and money, and from the near-fatal mistake that threatened to define him. After a decade spent recovering from his injuries, Williams recounts with a rare honesty his hard-fought path to college basketball stardom and the painful lessons he’s learned. Now in his thirties, Jay Williams is convinced that the crash that almost killed him at twenty-one was no accident, but a tragedy that taught him how to live.

This book is awesome. I finished it within 24 hours. A great book, that shows the ups and downs of life. Very insightful observations from Jay Williams as he takes you through his life as a basketball player and the world of the NBA.I really enjoyed the book. It's a fantastic read of coming to terms with one's decisions, and perseverance.Thanks.
This was a great read. I wasn't too familiar with Jay's story but I needed something to read on the airplane. I couldn't put it down. His story just sucks you in, really interesting. Written well, great story and inspiring. He went through so many hurdles and he had many ups and downs, but got through them with grace and knowledge. A super book and a great surprise.
Jay's focus on the consequences of defiance is what drew me to this book. But his brutal honesty about the trappings of the league, rebounding from momentary defeat and the cost of bodily injuries impact our mental state had me talking about this book to all of my friends. I wish I had the means to give this book to every high schooler and above in this country. A must read
IT SHOULD BE REQUIRED READING FOR ALL GOING INTO PROFESSIONAL SPORTS...WITH A TEST TO BE PASSED AND AN ESSAY TO WRITE ABOUT WHAT THEY LEARNED. ALL teams should mandate money counselling and require prenups. MOTORCYCLES SHOULD BE BANNED NOT ONLY FROM THESE ATHLETES BUT SHOULD BE TOTALLY BANNED IN THE ENTIRE US. ONE WRECK AWAY FROM DISASTER...EVEN IF THE FAULT OF SOMEONE ELSE.
Loved reading about Jay's life, his ups and downs and his fall from grace as a top pick by the Chicago Bulls. His journey through life and his struggles to recover from his injuries. It is an in-depth insight of what he went through and how he persevered. I would recommend this book.
I found this book by visiting the Breakfast Club and watching Jay's interview with the crew.It was very humbling to watch this man speak on the most disappointing aspect of his life with such fervor and honesty. It prompted me to buy his book in which I read in 2.5 days. Phenomenal read.Written from a man who searched to find his way in life and gravitated to the pasttime many young black boys seek. Sports - Basketball in particular. Basketball helped cement a future for this young phenom to be successful and provide for his family. A memorable quote by his father stands out to me as they visited Duke University and listened to Coach K spiel for him to go to Duke."Do you want to be a king among men or a King among Kings?" This quote really stands out as this should be a question asked of every boy reaching manhood. I believe this was probably one the greatest questions Jay was asked and it determined his trajectory into the Pros.Being one of the best ball players in the 2002 draft, He was flying on cloud 9 in the pros until that fateful day of his motorcycle accident which changed the course of everything. It reminds me of a meme I posted on FB. "The things you take for granted will eventually be taken away." How so true in Jay's case, but what he received was so much better... A second chance at making life better.I tip my hat to Jay as many of us live with our disappointments internally, Jay must continually live with his to the world as he is constantly reminded of a decision gone bad.I can definitely relate as I made quite a few bad decisions in my life.Excellent book, excellent read. A MUST BUY.
Yes a good read. They say the true making of a man is how he perseveres thru tragedy. It took some time, but Jay's triumph was in accepting his new limitations and establishing a new normal. Only then could he move forward.
Life of a successful athlete - how do make it through life. Today he is broadcasting sports and is really great! Good men.
