Review
“Long Shot tracks Hodges’s political awakening, from black-studies courses in college to his early run-ins with Donald Sterling, the notoriously racist owner of the San Diego (and later Los Angeles) Clippers. The trajectory is clear, and, despite the occasionally engrossing glimpse into the typical N.B.A. player’s home life—Hodges’s tumult involved R. Kelly—almost every detail is shared as context for his more radical turn in the late eighties and nineties.”—New Yorker"Hodges has told his compelling life story with fiery passion, looping around a cast of characters stretching from Jordan, Magic Johnson and Phil Jackson back to Muhammad Ali, Arthur Ashe and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, before returning to the present." —Guardian“In the book, Hodges talks about conversations he had with teammates Jordan and Pippen about their lack of knowledge regarding Black history. ‘I don't bring this up to shame Scottie, Michael, and the other players who aren't educated in our history,’ Hodges writes. ‘I bring it up because we can't solve a problem if we don't recognize the sickness.’” —Rolling Stone“Craig has written a very in depth portrait of his struggles and triumphs in the NBA and beyond.”—Kareem Abdul-Jabbar"The people's champion."—Chuck D"A skillfully told, affecting memoir of sports and social activism."—Kirkus"With its sharp observations about Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, and the state of race relations in the NBA, Long Shot is likely to cause a stir."—Chicago Reader“Craig Hodges is someone I looked up to as a child & now as an adult…I read Long Shot in like two hours, I couldn’t stop turning pages. There are so many hooks in it."—Jesse Williams"Long Shot is a beautifully written, brutally honest book. If you loved the Michael Jordan-era Chicago Bulls, if you love black history, or if you are fascinated by the politics of sports, I highly recommend this book. Simply put: Craig Hodges’ life is incredible and Long Shot is invaluable."—AETHLON: The Journal of Sport Literature"It is time to remove Craig Hodges from exile status and place him where he has always belonged: on the short-list of the activist athletes who stood tall, paid the price and now live their life perhaps scarred, but without regrets. Read this book so a new generation of NBA players and fans will know his true story. Read this book so to say not in a whisper but with a confident shout, 'You DO want to be like Craig Hodges.'—Dave Zirin, from the Introduction

As a basketball fan, Chicagoan and avid follower of the Bulls dynasty this book was great. It provided a lot of insight to what it takes to not only make an NBA player but also a world champion. Of course there were the behind the scene stories with Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Phil Jackson, but what I really liked was how Craig showed that he never lost site of who he was throughout his journey. I wish we had more athletes like him.Brother Hodges really bared his soul in this book and his story is powerful. The writing is also beautiful, vivid and easy to follow. It's a great read.
I love basketball, I loved this book. I first became aware of Craig Hodges when he played at Long Beach State and I was a professor at Long Beach. I valued his comments about Maulana Karenga and how his time at Long Beach profoundly effected his view of himself and his view of the world.I was thoroughly engaged by the book. I learned a lot about basketball. His experiences with Tex Winter affirmed for me that he was an extraordinarily talented and wise man. I had been ignorant about how the NBA had in essence boycotted Craig in the early 90s at the height of his career.Craig had an important story to tell, and he brilliantly told it. Kudos to him. This is a must read not only for all basketball fans but all those interested in the human condition and human justice.
Excellent story! I always liked Craig Hodges as person and basketball player. He was always clutch! This story is not about Race! It's all about human compassion for others in need! (Tex Winters and the Zen Master Phil Jackson.)
With the NFL's "white-balling" of Colin Kaepernick, and overall abuse of more than 70 percent of those who make up the league while refusing to simply acknowledge that Americans can have different perspectives on things. From Craig's perspective, America, as strong and mighty as it is, still has dirty laundry that needs cleaning. He was not mean with his convictions, only strongly believed in them. And while many may have shared his convictions one-on-one, they were too content with their status, or what have you, to stand behind him. It is a shame that he was robbed of both his career and millions of dollars, but the most successful movements come with a lot of sacrifice. Thank you Craig Hodges for your integrity and perseverance.
A very good book, Craig Hodges put is believes ahead of his career and it cost him. M.J. had to do M.J. and he paid a price also, but not the Altima price he 's got fame and Fortnum but lost a little respect of his people. To Craig I say " fighting for your rights isn't wrong", to M.J. I say "for one to go forward they must go back and rediscover some values that left behind". With that I think God makes no mistakes each is good people in they own way.
Very easy read, like talking to Craig at his kitchen table. If you like the NBA, this book is very enlightening and confirms what you thought happen to a shooter like Craig. I am sure Colin's book will read the same when he writes about standing up like Craig did
This book is a quick, informative, eye opening, and entertaining narrative on the career of former NBA star Craig Hodges. If you want to have a career in sports, this is required reading. Very well done!
Enjoyed and appreciate what was written. Very entertaining and educational. Thanks Craig Hodges....
