So, My high-school aged son is dead set on joining the military. His school offered the ASVAB and he did well. Unfortunately, the choice MOS' require extremely high ASVAB scores. Knowing that we went and convinced the recruiter to retest my son. These flashcards as well as the ASVAB study guide (another brand) helped immensely! My son's retake did the trick by teaching him in subject areas where he had no previous exposure such as electronics and automotive. I didn't take my ASVAB test yet, but these flashcards are helping me so much! I love how each test section is categorized by a blue color strip and that each flashcards comes with an explanation and not just the answer. I have a feeling that if I stick with this and study all 400+ flashcards I'll be in great shape for taking my test. I'm also pairing this with the Kaplan Prep Plus book, which is also extremely helpful.Edit: I meant to write this weeks ago, but there are SEVERAL typos throughout this set. Its not too big of a deal for me bc I get what it was meant to say, but I can definitely see how it could confuse some ppl. An example would be card #94, it says to subtract but the example shows multiplication. Other than that it's still a great study set.

Great product I brought these for my brother and got an 87 on the asvab.

My daughter struggles with math and electronic principals. These flash cards helped her study and she passed the ASVAB test. Scored well enough for great job opportunities with the Navy.

Practicing the King's Economy: Honoring Jesus in How We Work, Earn, Spend, Save, and GivePracticing the Kings Economy is truly inspirational and enlightening experience. I say “experience” because these authors are making sure that Practicing the Kings Economy is more than just about reading a good book. It’s about transforming the lives of the readers. They have established a web site and an online devotional paired with sections from the book. This book changes the way we think about helping others. If God’s economy is a potluck rather than a soup kitchen, our primary problem isn’t that poor people “out there” are hungry and hurting. Our primary problem is that because of economic poverty and sin, the poor aren’t participating fully in the joyful life of the community, giving and receiving gifts.It is a challenging book for the reader because it lays out clearly the spiritual requirements to participate in of the Kings economy. Along the way it askes some difficult questions: “Imagine you’re offered your dream job, but it pays half your current salary. Would you take it?...What steps could you take to simplify your life so there would be more to share? Keep in mind that in the immediate term, this might require also releasing yourself from debt so you might be freed for greater generosity in the future, ‘prepared for every good work’ (Titus 3:1 LEB). Also consider how you could give the excess you free up in such a way that it draws you into relationships, particularly with those in need.”

I was thinking this was good to great for much of the book, then I read the application part of the Creation Key.What unmitigated hogwash. They uncritically push the moronic organic food movement and braindead farms like EdenThistle and Polyface despite the overwhelming evidence against both. It's so stunningly inaccurate, and unchallenged, that it brings the entire rest of the book into question.Here's a quick tip to everyone out there, including the authors who clearly couldn't be bothered to do a shred of real research on food and land use. There are more than 8,000 peer reviewed published articles on organic/conventional/GMO foods. There is literally zero nutritional difference at the moment and that's before the introduction of many of the newer GMO crops. On top of that, GMO foods use upwards of 30% less pesticides, that's before the introduction of pest resistant crops that don't need to be sprayed at all, and GMO pesticides are far less toxic than their organic counterparts. To go another step, GMO crops use significantly less land to produce much higher yields, and they cause less soil erosion.I'm genuinely angry at how lazy, or just willfully ignorant, the authors are on this subject. I'm putting the book away and won't be finishing it because of the despicably untrue tripe they pushed as legitimate in chapter 10. Shame on you guys. Go take a middle school science class, you obviously didn't learn anything the first time.

Even though most churches don’t cover economic issues beyond tithing, love offerings, and building funds, we are called to be whole life economic disciples. We are living in America, which has its own economic culture and values that we have spent our lives training for, but we are citizens of Heaven, and Jesus’ economy is different. It is not about consumption and individual wealth and maximizing profits. He’s not even about individual stability – it’s better to lend to others in need even when we can’t afford it with the idea that someone else will be able to help us out when we need it down the road. Scripture actually has a lot to say about economics, showing us that God is willing to get involved in the messy economic lives of his people because he wants everyone at a potluck instead of a soup kitchen. Rhodes says we should start practicing economic discipleship by “bending our economic lives towards the potluck, toward inclusion and dignity” in six different areas.Worship: The way we approach work and money in our lives can be worship and it can also be idolatry. “Giving signals and solidifies our allegiance to and dependence on God and his kingdom” (p. 54). God is a generous Creator and we are being his image-bearers when we are generous ourselves.Community: God doesn’t want us to live independent economic lives, but has designed us for community. His laws show us that he is creating for himself a family and the economy in that family should be one of interdependence and generosity. We are to aim our wealth at the good of the community rather than only thinking of our own lives. A way this is practiced throughout the Bible and could be done today is by feasting together “across racial and/or social economic lines” (p. 124) because in Jesus’ economy everyone has a unique plate to bring to the potluck.Work: One of the ways we have a plate to bring to the potluck is through our work. God calls us to work and to make sure work is available to others. We see this in the gleaning laws in the Old Testament. Rhodes describes this as “bend[ing] [our] economic lives toward the marginalized, creatively and sacrificially leaving some of our own profits in the field to create opportunities for struggling workers in our societies” (p. 143). Not maximizing profits is completely against what the economic policies of the American kingdom would say. In practice, this could look like being willing to hire ex-felons or teenagers from low-income communities. Social enterprises start businesses specifically for the purpose of community change. Rhodes quotes the Social Enterprise Alliance’s description of this approach, which he says is the future for unprecedented progress in these areas, as having “the social mission of a non-profit…with the market-driven approach of a business” (p. 148). For example, the owners of Lucy J’s Bakery worked in the food industry and in fundraising with Dorothy Day house for homeless people, so they started a bakery where they intentionally hire homeless people so that they too can bring a plate to the potluck.Equity: Old Testament laws like the Jubilee ensured an equitable and inclusive community by making sure the poorest don’t get permanently stuck being poor, and by making sure that those who have much don’t have too much and those who have less don’t have too little. In Deuteronomy 15:4, God says that if they follow his economic laws, there will be no poor among them. A way we can be economic disciples toward equity is through impact investing. Impact investing “refers to financial investments that accept a lower financial return in exchange for a higher social return” (p. 186). In other words, they may not be the best business moves by American economic standards, but they are doing some good in the world.Creation Care: Jesus’s death and resurrection is good news for all of creation because all of creation will be renewed. We have a special role in the created world as the conduits of God’s blessings to it. Because of sin, we become vehicles and conduits of curses to the created world rather than conduits of blessings. Our job is to serve and care for the world, and we are to love and delight in the world like God does. Rhodes says, “It’s not just stuff for us to use, but a living beauty to be stewarded and cared for and unpacked in ways that honor our wise King.” A simple way to be a good economic disciple in this area is to bend some of our purchasing power toward things that are good news for the land and animals, especially those who we partner with in our economic lives.Rest: Lastly, the Sabbath is an important part of the economy. God wants to give us the “blessed and holy gift” (p.240) of rest, as he rested when he created the world and calls us to imitate him. Good work is work that occasionally stops. This is practiced in making sure we receive rest for ourselves, but also making sure we give rest to those who depend on us. We also see in the Bible how Sabbath years brought all the people together in equal status.Jesus is God the King in the flesh who came to ransom his world and establish his kingdom on earth. Economic discipleship is learning to work, give, save, invest, share and spend like Jesus is the king and we are his citizens. When we invest our time and energy in living by the policies of Jesus' economy, it will be be good news for us, the people around us, and the land and animals, and will draw others into the saving faith of Jesus as they see how generous and caring our God is. That’s a task worth giving your life to, and this book is a great start in learning how to do that in practical ways. Don't miss it.

In Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, Wittgenstein “deals with the problems of philosophy and shows … that the method of formulating these problems rests on the misunderstanding of the logic of our language.”Hence, the author demonstrates that the solution to most philosophic problems becomes a critical method of linguistic analysis.Tractatus begins with ontology and the state of affairs of the world is described. From there the book deals largely with the question of how language works and how it can describe the world accurately. Many forms of language (e.g. names and propositions) reflect different objective parts of reality (e.g. objects and facts). Logic is then discussed as it pertains to tautologies, contradictions and propositions. From this claim stems the conclusion that that the laws of science are not logical “laws,” but a means that we use to express reality—hence, science does not in fact explain our world but merely describes it.Although the author embraces logic, he ironically ventures into the mystical on many occasions. Some of such highlights of Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus include the proposal that most philosophical propositions are senseless (4.003), the relativity of “free” will and the lack of inner necessity of causality (5.1362), and the inability to recognize either the truth or falsehood from non-logical propositions. Wittgenstein brilliantly elaborates on widely accepted, yet wholly non-certain, everyday happenings (6.363II to 6.372) and clarifies that all ethics is transcendental (6.42I). In effect, the author posits that morality is in fact objective because subjective morality stems from happenstance, and is therefore meaningless.All potential readers should be acutely aware that this book is a very, very tough read. You may find yourself taking several minutes to read through one short page and then several hours to digest what it is you in fact just read. Either way, Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus is a terse, powerful, enigmatic and notable in its ability to whisk the dormant imagination into shape. The intellectual ramifications of being able to fully grasp and comprehend the material are limitless.

Amazing read, and recommendable. Wittgenstein tried to spell out precisely what a logically constructed language can (and cannot) be used to say. Its seven basic propositions simply state that language, thought, and reality share a common structure, fully expressible in logical terms.On Wittgenstein's view, the world consists entirely of facts. (Tractatus 1.1) Human beings are aware of the facts by virtue of our mental representations or thoughts, which are most fruitfully understood as picturing the way things are. (Tractatus 2.1) These thoughts are, in turn, expressed in propostitions, whose form indicates the position of these facts within the nature of reality as a whole and whose content presents the truth-conditions under which they correspond to that reality. (Tractatus 4) Everything that is true—that is, all the facts that constitute the world—can in principle be expressed by atomic sentences. Imagine a comprehensive list of all the true sentences. They would picture all of the facts there are, and this would be an adequate representation of the world as a whole. Tractatus, however, not only provides a way to structure our knowledge about the world, but also provokes to develop a critical contradiction with a non-factual or emotioanl sphere of human nature.

I consider this book to be very worth reading because it is associated with an extremely important period in philosophy following the work of Frege, Russell and Whitehead. I found it to be very opaque. Wittgenstein seemed to be struggling with ideas he encountered while considering the work of Frege, Russell and Whitehead. The preface by Russell showed that he considered the work to be very significant. I intend to study more about this, and will probably revise this review later. For now, I would recommend reading the Tractatus, but I did not understand it very well.I think that a primary aim of Wittgenstein in the Tractatus was to address Russell's paradox and other problems of the "language" of logic, as being developed by Frege, Russell and Whitehead at that time. This led him into deep waters with respect to the mysteries of language, and a seeming necessity to set limits, even if these limits were somewhat arbitrary. Certainly some of his insights in this regard were highly penetrating. In particular, he viewed transgressing limits where truth could be adequately assessed as entering a realm of nonsense. I feel that had Gödel's work been available at the time, Wittgenstein might have thought somewhat differently about the limits he perceived. On the other hand, Wittgenstein ignored this work later in the more mature phases of his thinking. I came away from the Tractatus feeling that while it is still of great importance, especially as it was at a historical nexus in the evolution of logic, and displays some profound insights, time has somewhat passed it by.

This appears to be the product of a poor scan and OCR. There are multiple typos per page. Why does this matter more than usual? It's Wittgentein, and he was all about how ideas can and cannot be expressed in language. By introducing errors like this, it renders it almost unreadable.

One of the most influential books of the first half of the twentieth century and alongside Philosophical Investigations sets the standard for analytical philosophy's immense influence on modern theory. I am so happy I decided to purchase this book! It has been a wonderful addition during our history lessons. We love the maps, coloring sheets, suggested projects and the review questions are so helpful.

A great history curriculum... for auditory learners this history on CD is amazing and will give you a real grasp on how history flows from one event / period into another!

Coupled with the Story of the World text, the Activity Book has been the cornerstone of our somewhat reluctant venture into homeschooling. (We had a sudden overseas move and had to jump into homeschooling with little preparation.) Studying history has proven essentially effortless because the book and activities are so interesting that my 8-year-old begs to do her work. As non-religious academic types ourselves, we were wary of religious biases in the texts we chose for our kids; we've been very happy with the author's balanced treatment.For the teaching parent, the lists of supplementary materials are invaluable -- exceptionally well-organized and researched, and the editors have been sure to include reading materials for different levels, which we have appreciated since it means we can easily include the 4-year-old in our stories. Every chapter includes review questions to test comprehension orally, then several worksheets which may include maps, coloring pages, and other activities. Many include recipes from the place and time being studied -- always a hit with the kids. All have worked well so far. The map work is a great follow-up as well, walking the student step-by-step through visual representations of different topics covered in the text (coloring the Triangular Trade route used by slave traders, for example). Although there's no way any student could complete all the suggested activities in a school year, I love the freedom of picking and choosing the activities that best suit and interest my daughter.As suggested by the Activity Book, we're assembling all this work into a history notebook, a 3-ring binder full of my daughter's work. This serves the dual purpose of reminding her how much she's learned and giving us tangible proof of the homeschooling process. In short, this book has transformed us into homeschoolers and history buffs. Very useful.

This is not as nice as the first 2 activity books. The coloring pages are much less detailed and the whole thing seems like just generally lower quality.

Artwork not as good as earlier books, but we still love the activity book to supplement our curriculum. We thoroughly enjoy The Story of the World history curriculum.

Story of the World by Susan Wise Bauer is very nicely written. It's easy as a "read-aloud" book, but it's also easily read by a person of fifth grade reading level or above. It covers history throughout the world at the same time so that one gets a sense of what was happening while key events (to the reader) were occurring. I highly recommend it.

The best history book for children. The best storytelling author. Write more books.

This curriculum is great for hands-on history learning. My kids love the activities and they remember what they read because they get to have a feel with how history was by using the maps and doing the activities!

Steven SvobodaWendy McElroy, author of XXX: A Woman’s Right to Pornography and Sexual Correctness: The Gender-Feminist Attack on Women, has published a new book about the rape culture mythology that is currently reigning in our country thanks to hardcore feminism.McElroy writes well, is insightful, and is not afraid to say what she thinks. She is a devout libertarian whose commitment to those political principles does come through at times like a religious fervor that can overtake her views. Having said that, McElroy is obviously entitled to her opinions, and I can’t give her book anything other than a rave review. I’m not aware of any previous author having addressed this issue at book length, and it did need addressing.We know where the author is going from her very first paragraph, which is starkly laid out and may reflect a lot of revisions:There is no rape culture in North America. There is a rape culture hysteria that is not based on evidence, statistics or reason. In fact, the politically correct (PC) myth or lie of a rape culture flies in the face of all evidence, statistics and reason because it is ideologically motivated.McElroy then goes on to lay out, in no uncertain terms, why the rape culture myth “is part of an “ultimate goal of PC feminism [that] is breathtaking in scope.”As with the author’s previous books, her sparing yet well-chosen personal disclosures enhance both her credibility and the emotional appeal of her book. “In my twenties, I chose the wrong romantic partner and the mistake culminated in a domestic assault that was severe enough to leave me legally blind in my right eye.” McElroy adroitly notes that while PC feminism generally believes that “having been attacked gives me special credentials to speak out on the rape culture,” at the same time, feminism tries to silence dissenting voices like hers:[V]ictims like me are inconvenient. I’ve received the distinct impression that PC feminists would like to yank the victim-credential out from under women like me who both vindicate and debunk their ideology in the same breath.What McElroy adroitly terms “zombie statistics” are used to prop up the rape culture myth, statistics she later debunks in detail, such as that one in every 4 or 5 women will be raped in their lifetimes, and only 2% of all rape accusations are false. To her credit, the author forthrightly notes that the book does not address the topic of male victims of rape, outlining how male victims are defined out of inclusion in statistics on sexual victimization. “Some rape culture zealots,” she later notes, “will respond with an outright denial that men can be raped.”I very much appreciated the author’s recognition of Charles Mackay’s “remarkable book that became a classic within sociology, economics, politics, and psychology,” published in 1841. The book addressed mob psychology, which McElroy ties into the current topic. Two defining characteristics of mob psychology are that 1) members act collectively in a way they would never act by themselves, and 2) a mob tolerates no dissent or limits on its energy.In a telling section, McElroy discusses the war culture we had during World War II and asks if any of the defining characteristics that made our culture a war culture then could make our culture a rape culture no. “Does government mandate policies and laws to encourage rape rather than to prevent or punish it?... Do most families have relatives who are rapists?” Her conclusion is predictable yet valuable in concretely showing how far we are from actually having a rape culture in this country.The author also notes that the US rape rate declined to a forty-year low in 2013, and PC feminists did not celebrate this event, nor as far as I know did they even mention it. “To them, the decline is bad news because it calls into question the validity of their world view and for some, it threatens their livelihood.” In contrast to feminist claims of a college “rape epidemic,” “in fact, the rate of college female victimization has been trending downward for almost 20 years.”Many of us have heard it before but McElroy appropriately reminds us of Mary Koss’ notorious research in which “73 percent of the women whom she characterized as rape victims said that they hadn’t been raped.” Even worse, “42 percent of Koss’s supposed victims had intercourse again with their alleged assailants.”Nominally gender neutral policies and regulations almost always treat males as the default offender and females as the default victim.While Michel Foucault no doubt developed an interesting theory, treating sex or gender as a matter of social construction and power is more than a bit much. Then we have the feminist theory of “microaggressions,” which McElroy debunks in detail.Surely for anyone who is no longer a virgin, the absurdity of the “yes means yes” affirmative consent laws is clear. As the author correctly writes:[T]wo college seniors who’ve been in a loving relationship since they met during the first week of their freshman years and who, with the ease of the committed, slip naturally from cuddling to sex, could fail its test.Despite Susan Brownmiller, “rape is caused not by cultural factors [such as so-called patriarchy’ but by the conscious decisions of a small percentage of the community to commit a violent crime.”The author goes on to explore in detail the Rolling Stone-promulgated University of Virginia fraternity gang rape myth. One of the most disturbing aspects of campus review of alleged rapes is the civil standard of evidence that is used to effectively criminalize a male student’s often innocent behavior and in some cases even wreck their lives. The author shows us that amazingly, rape culture zealots call on us to believe rape claims regardless of whether they are true or not! This would have led, McElroy writes, to feminists siding with the young white woman in the famous novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, when she falsely accused a black man of rape. A predictable result is that lawsuits by aggrieved male students wrongfully tossed out of their university are becoming legion.McElroy provides a helpful list of questions to use in appraising the objectivity and value of research. Some of the data claiming men would rape women if they could get away with it has been cited over and over but the ostensible original source doesn’t even exist.Another problem to which the author points is variable definitions of rape. One data set considered “sexual coercion” to constitute sexual violence, and includes in its definition a boyfriend’s threat to end a relationship if his girlfriend doesn’t have sex with him, “wearing [the girlfriend] down by repeatedly asking for sex,” and “showing he is unhappy.” Another data set does not separate rape statistics from other sexual assaults, which “includes forced kissing, grabbing, and ‘rubbing up against you in a sexual way.’”“Rape” is subject to various definitions that are even “stretched to include verbal harassment in situations where no physical contact has occurred.” The author includes a very useful cross-comparison of rape statistics from the different leading sources, appraising the different definitions used and also the widely varying conclusions that were reached. McElroy is a fair author and doesn’t avoid mentioning research reaching conclusions favoring higher rape figures when those are what is present in a particular source. She concludes, reasonably enough, “The data is an onslaught of confusion.” A little later she notes that more accurate and useful advice for a female student might be something like, “In any given year, there is something like a one percent chance that you will be raped. That’s true whether or not you go to college – in fact, college is slightly safer for you.”The author lists some very trenchant harms of rape culture: preventing healthy sexual relationships, increasing skepticism about rape claims, preventing healing from rape, endangering women’s safety, infantilizing women, and polarizing women and short-circuiting critical thinking. McElroy rightly, and forcefully, insists on the application of proper scrutiny and standards of evidence to all rape accusations. She contributes an awesome combination of personal disclosure and objectivity as she revisits her own rape experience and connects the dots to the need for fairness to all and avoidance of gender dogma.I was not raped by men as a class, by the patriarchy or by society. One man was responsible. Most men I know would have defended me, even if it had endangered them, because they are decent human beings. An essential step in my healing was to direct my rage at the individual who had harmed me and to not blame men who would have protected me. If I had generalized my fury, then I doubt if I could have fallen in love with my husband. I would have missed the greatest emotional fulfillment I’ve ever found.The author goes on to make a couple of related telling points. First, feminism seems to be celebrating victimhood rather than heroism and secondly, advising someone to act defensively such as by not dressing provocatively is now considered by some to be victim-blaming rather than sensible advice. “As bizarre as it sounds… PC feminists believe a woman should be able to walk naked through a biker’s bar and never be attacked or threatened.”McElroy’s final chapter may be the most contentious, as she presents potential solutions to rape culture hysteria, some of which seemed to stem from her political perspective. She proposed abolishing the Department of Education (DoE), drastically reducing the DoE budget, repealing Title IX, devolving educational authority to state level, or privatizing higher education.Wendy McElroy concludes her book just as strongly as it begins: “Without being able to dissent, there is no freedom, no justice, no color to life. There is only 1984. Welcome to the true rape culture – the rape of human freedom.” And welcome to another outstanding, indispensable masterwork from Wendy McElroy. Highly recommended.

Great book summarizing some of the ways in which the overreaching of modern academic feminism insults survivors of real-world violence. McElroy is a deep thinker, a feminist, and no stranger to real-world violence.

This book restores a sense of balance and rational thought to the discussion of rape and sexual assault (or at least what should be a discussion), especially in the context of the statistics reported for college campuses. If the information you hear in the media does not seem to match your experience, and especially if it does match your perception, this is a valuable read to counter the onslaught of misinformation in the press. Kudos to Wendy McElroy for her continued courage and willingness to wade into the outraged fray with the still, quiet voice of reason.*The book does not appear to be optimized for Kindle, and in particular, the Kindle app for iPhone.

Wendy McElroy’s Rape Culture Hysteria is a timely and courageous exposé of the PC feminist charge that western society is a “rape culture.”Over the past few years, the allegation that North America’s legal institutions, educational system, and social mores promote a culture of rape has been used to justify a series of draconian policies — many of which violate the constitutional rights of the accused, while doing little to prevent sexual assault. Nevertheless, such policies (and “the evidence” on which they are based) go largely unchallenged because critics are accused of being rape deniers or facilitators.In Rape Culture Hysteria, McElroy systematically examines the history, ideological underpinnings, and deeply flawed data behind the “rape culture” charge. She thoroughly demonstrates that the charge is motivated by a feminist ideological agenda seeking social transformation rather than a concern for facts and evidence. Consequently, while the policies that result may benefit politicians, advocacy groups, and administrators, they do not effectively confront the real evil of rape and sexual assault.It takes great fortitude to challenge the intellectual dishonesty and totalitarian tendencies of the well-connected and powerful. McElroy has done an extremely valuable service by striving to restore academic integrity to an issue rife with emotions, ideology, and blatant dishonesty.

One can only hope that this book will be widely read and that it's contents will serve as background material to challenge candidates for public office on these issues -- not only in person but also in op-eds and in letters-to-the editor.Should all this come to pass, it would constitute a tremendous public service by the author.

Wendy effectively demolishes the current fad of claiming that rapes and sexual assaults are commonplace on campus. The book is well worth reading.
