This book is full of information necessary to understand where International Adoption is today. It's well researched and mapped out. However the main purpose of the book is to explain their theory on paying birth parents during the adoption process.This seems backwards to me, the current system of International Adoption is already incredibly corrupt due to monetary greed and, knowing that, they still want to put more money into it? We already have birth mothers, countries and organizations selling children solely for monetary gain. I agree these countries and families may need help but is encouraging them to sell their children really the answer? No child should ever be attached to a price tag. Is it so inconceivable to propose we get rid of monetary compensation all together? (I would actually really like someone to answer this question.)Four stars for the information, minus a star for promoting the selling of human beings.

this book blends the two well. I heard the authors speak at a recent adoptive families conference and bought the book out of curiosity. I must say they present their theory well in this engaging and accessible book. The book isn't dry and technical; the authors add enough real life examples to make it readable for the layperson. The authors speak from the heart as well as the head. This is a good read for anyone open to the idea of a different way to improve the life of kids AND the two sets of parents.

Definitely pro-international Adoption, yet surprisingly balanced. Also, very readable and not too academic for what seems to be a well-researched book. They propose something that seems audacious to solve the main problems in international adoption, but they’ve pretty much convinced me by the end. What’s weird is that what seems unthinkable for worldwide adoption of kids, is what is the norm in the US and accepted. That is, open adoption and some payment of birth moms allowed, though not encouraged. Pretty cool.

I had the pleasure of hearing Mark and Irene speak at a recent conference. Their presentation style is very similar to the style of their book- engaging, down to earth, a bit humorous, and backed by lots of data.As I listened to their presentation I found myself intrigued by their proposal, but not convinced. After reading their book on the subject I am still not sure I'm convinced that their idea would work, but it sure seems like it's worth a try. They definitely make a good case for their argument and I can see a point where I would come around to their way of thinking, especially if their method has some initial success. Their book definitely made clear that what's happening now is not working, and is preventing children who need homes and families who want children from coming together, for merely political reasons. I also enjoyed the stories about Isata that were interspersed through the book.I recommend this book to anyone interested in international adoption, and especially for those who have or who are considering adopting a child from overseas.

Evidence based and very thorough. An interesting read.

This book is for anyone in search of the truth! Written in easy to understand language. If you want to become a better person or a better catholic read this book! Or if you just want to understand catholics a little better! It demystifies common catholic practice and the culture of the church! "Peace be with you!"

I have used this book for many years preparing Adults for Confirmation or Conversion. It is in Question & Answer format with short lessons. It is filled with Bible citations. Generally each lesson begins with a Bible quotation, then Q & A's on the topic of the lesson (eg. "The Bible and Tradition," "Sanctifying Grace," etc.), and finally some practical points. In the back there are sections of popular prayers, lists of common mortal sins or venial sins, how to pray the Rosary, and Profession of Faith. This book is originally printed in 1958, so certain modifications to ecclesiastical discipline are not mentioned (such as change in fasting and abstinence.) Overall it is a very useful book for the basics.

I got this book in the mail today, but was irritated at the fact that it included the new disciplinary changes and even changed some of the wording in the book. The author's preface also emphasizes that as well. I don't know if other reviewers got a version that was not revised according to the Second Vatican Council.While even Our Lady of the Rosary Library has included the disciplinary changes, their version of this catechism said, :"The Mass is said in Latin because Latin is the official language of the Catholic Church and was the official and universal language in many parts of the world 2,000 years ago; also, because it is a language that does not change (it is not spoken anymore). (Ed. note: This way, no matter where you travel, the Mass will always be the same and you will recognize it and the language.)"Compare that with this on page 16: "The Mass until recent years was said in Latin because Latin is the official language of the Church and was the official and universal language in many parts of the world two thousand years ago; also, because it is a language that does not change.(Mass is also said in several other sacred languages, such as Greek and Old Slavonic.) Today it is usually said in the language of the people, but in some places it is till said in the traditional Latin. In the old missals(books containing the Mass prayers) you will find the Mass prayers in both Latin and English."The Catholic Mass, particularly the Western Rite, is in Latin. It's not open to interpretation.Greek and Old Slavonic are sacred languages, too?What exactly needed to be revised from the original Catechism? I'm getting kind of tried of trying to find catechisms that teach the True Faith on a wide variety of topics without the adding of all these innovations that are not necessary. That which is binding , they reject and that which is not binding on them, they embrace. It's annoying. I simply need to know what the Catholic Church teaches, whole and entire without guile, falsehoods, deceptions, and misguided and misplaced sympathy for view points and values that are contrary to the teachings of Holy Mother Church.

This book offers informative information about what the Church teaches in an easy to read question-and-answer format. I appreciate the prayers contained in the back of the book. Recommend this to anyone just beginning to learn the faith or wanting to brush up on their catechism.

We first encountered this book at a friends house when we visited earlier this month. After reading just a few pages, both my husband and I decided to order it and ship it home so it would be waiting for us when we returned. The principles and practices laid out in Supernanny are clear, concise and sound. Jo Frost has a natural demeanor in her writing that makes you want to relax as a parent, as you realize you are not alone in your battle of toddlerhood. She eases you into new perspectives and approaches, shifting your gaze from wanting to control your children, to aspiring to lead them with a newfound empathy of thier own struggles of learning about life and how to live it. This is a great read. The most important principle I have learned so far is to not give in or give up. After just one week of applying the 'Naughty Step', I am not only seeing some response in my toddler, but am finding an inner peace (sometimes) while working with her to correct 'naughty' behaviors (instead of my normal frantic state prior). Looking forward to reading more and keeping this one handy for years to come.

Great book. She focuses on the age of 2 ish years I would say, and right around there. Yes, she goes into other ages, but I found her focus stuck to under 5. Helpful for those toddler years for sure, but not super great for older kids.

I haven't read this one all the way through yet, but it is exactly what I needed so far!It's easy to read and she words it in ways to make it flow from book to practical knowledge quickly. I also love that she includes real life examples to relate to. I'm so excited to read more and help my toddler become a well-mannered young man in the coming years!

Ever since I started watching Jo Frost expertly handle unruly children on her show Super Nanny several years ago I have been awed and humbled by her powers - lol. She can turn an undisciplined child (toddler to 5-6 yr olds) around with firm, consistent rules, without yelling or spanking/hitting him or her and with compassion and love. It is a power to behold as far as I'm concerned and what she teaches on her show (which comes from her 15 years of experience as a professional nanny to British and American families) is written in a clear, concise manner in her book "How to Get the Best from Your Child". I purchased this book shortly after my daughter was born, but didn't start using some of Jo Frost's suggestions until she was well into her first year. They work! My child is approaching the terrible two stage and my family is getting ready for the "naughty step/room" technique.You must have a certain level of patience to undertake the disciplinary steps that Jo Frost recommends, but you will see results. I cannot tout this book highly enough - there are many news reports of children being severely abused (some dying from the abuse) in this country. For the survivors of childhood abuse, they often grow into adulthood emotionally damaged. Some people clearly shouldn't be parents and no matter what you tell them they will still abuse their children, but there are others who may simply not know how to properly discipline a child or may be "old school" about it. Introduce yourself or them to Super Nanny! When the kids grow up they'll be glad you did.

This was another book I bought to help me with my parenting tasks. This book is at my bedside and has been for quite some time. It is amazing how we go back to our "Old Ways" or do what was done to us without even thinking about it. This book has definitely taught me many different techniques in parenting my children that have HELPED tremendously in my home. I really enjoyed watching the show in the beginning but it seems that it is the same problems. My children have never been out of control like the children that are on the show but I have lost it myself and did things that I later felt was not in the best interest of my family. (Yell)The book helps to change that and keeping it close by-allows for you to stay on the right path so that you don't fall back into your past techniques that did not work to begin with.The layout of the book is great. It is an easy read reference book. Although this woman is not a parent herself-she has very good techniques that DO work for parents and care givers. I definitely recommend this book.

Let me 1st start with I LOVE my toddler. My son is a wonderful little boy... with A LOT of energy. Yes, my son like everyone's children is just perfect. Except for those moments when he doesnt want to eat his lunch, go to bed, take a bath, share his toys, or use his indoor voice LOL If your like me and your not Mary Poppins when it comes to your kids- sometimes you need some help on figuring out how to correct bad behavior without losing your cool. This book has been very helpful in showing me new ways to approach things, how to talk to my son so he understands me, how to recognize what my sons point of view is and how I should talk to him if I want him to understand what I want. There are a lot of parenting books that tell you either what your kid is doing wrong or what your doing wrong as a parent... THIS IS NOT THAT TYPE OF BOOK! THIS BOOK REEDUCATED Parents and shows them the loving way to correct their children without it turning into a huge fight. I am very grateful for my husband finding this book. (just dont tell him that) Its worth a read!!

About the Author

Larry Greene knows all about the challenges facing young distance runners. He won state championships in high school cross country and track, becoming a Florida state champion in cross country and the 2-mile run and finishing 10th in the national Junior Olympic Cross Country Meet as a senior. Greene’s high school accomplishments earned him a scholarship to Florida State University, where he set the school record for the indoor 3,000-meter run and qualified for the NCAA championship meet three times. After college, Greene excelled as a distance runner. In 1984, he ran the fastest half marathon in the world (1:01:27) and finished 4th in the 10,000-meter run at the U.S. Track and Field Championships. In 1987, he finished 3rd in the half marathon at the U.S. Olympic Festival. Greene is a scientific and medical writer in South Florida. He received an MS in movement science from Florida State University and a PhD in exercise science from the University of South Carolina. He has coached distance runners at the youth, university, and professional levels. He has also served as the director of the Carolina Marathon Youth Cross Country Run. His leisure interests include running, cycling, and cross-country skiing. Russ Pate has been an exercise science instructor and researcher since 1972. He serves as a professor in the department of exercise science at the University of South Carolina, where his research is focused on the relationship between physical activity and health in children and adolescents. Pate is a lifelong distance runner. He has a personal best time of 2:15:20 in the marathon and competed in three U.S. Olympic Trials Marathons. Pate has served as president of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the National Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity, and the National Physical Activity Plan Alliance. He has been recognized with awards by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; the American College of Sports Medicine; the National Fitness Leaders Association; and the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. He has also directed two U.S. Olympic Trials Women’s Marathons. Pate received a PhD in exercise physiology from the University of Oregon in 1974. In his free time, he enjoys running, reading, theater, traveling, and spending time with his family.

Excellent book for the young runner and their parents. Complete information on training and nutrition. Especially like the chapter on the mental approach to running. The information on weight training is a bit elementary and lacking, but you can find that information online. Overall there isn't a better book for the high school runner.

It also talks about normal growth and development and how to avoid injuries, good stretches to warm up with, problems experienced by young runners, good nutrition, the mental aspects of running, and many other subjects for a thorough review

After reading This at home, and "Be as You Are": 'The Teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi' at my office... I have found that these two books have many of the same Questions and Answers.This one has less pages but it has enough content.Less is More in this case and both books are close enough to the same price to make this the better choice.These two are not biographies nor someone re hashing His Teachings and Outlook; just straight talk.Osborn's introduction is much clearer and concise; the flow is also greatly enhanced.
