From School Library Journal

Gr 3–5—There's much here to attract readers in search of the gross or unsettling: mosquito saliva injected under the skin to keep the blood flowing, flesh-eating fungus, bedbugs infesting the folds and seams of a quilt. While students might approach the book for casual reference or brief readings, it does lack a unifying narrative or appealing visuals. Readers will open with an introduction to the skin and immune system and then encounter a new class of irritant with each chapter—lice, fleas, plants, fungus, etc. Informative descriptions outline the mechanism of common itchy irritants, including the tiny stinging spines (glochids) that cover the prickly pear cactus or the irritating setae that tarantulas rip from their hind legs and fling at potential predators. Many remedies are offered, particularly traditional, folk, or nontoxic solutions, such as using fresh cucumber to soothe the irritation from stinging nettle or massaging a dog with coconut oil for treatment of flea bites. Ford's illustrations are colorful and lighthearted but add little to the text, particularly in exposition of scientific research. There are no photographs. The text includes a glossary and index, as well as a significant bibliography and list of helpful websites, in addition to a handful of specific source notes. VERDICT Despite being an adequate reference source on an off-beat subject, this is nonetheless a secondary purchase.—Bob Hassett, Luther Jackson Middle School, Falls Church, VA

This book/booklet provided answers to just about all the questions, facts & myths surrounding insects/bugs/plants that cause an itching reaction to exposure/contact with them. The author is thorough, but keeps it simple using laymen's terminology that everyone can understand. The book also provides some very good information on cures and palliative treatments that can give relief to those of us who have unfortunate encounters with the things that cause itching/pain. And, it reveals old myths and time worn disinformation that you've heard from your parents, grandparents etc. that are blatantly wrong. It gives you the "Dos" and "Dont's" of treatment for various sources of itchyness. It can save you added discomfort by pointing out those "Old wives tales" treatments that actually make things WORSE!This is a great learning tool and reference source to have handy...especially after having an unfortunate "close encounter" with those creatures & flora that are the source of bothersome, itchy and/or painful irritation. And, depending on how fast a reader you are, the entire book can be read in 15 to 30 minutes. (It will take longer if you're under the age of 13 or are dyslexic.)

This book was fascinating and entertaining at the same time. Not only are the illustrations amusing, the text is written so that children (and adults!) can read the stories behind itches while learning about fungus, and fleas, nettles and caterpillars, and those pesky bedbugs. The beauty of this book is that it covers history (Salem witches, bugs in the trenches in WWI), science (mosquitoes and carbon dioxide), health (Is there anything good about itching?) and weird events (flea circus, prickly pears take over Australia!). I promise you will read it with a smile, and if you find yourself scratching, the author will tell you why!

Love this duo - Anita Sanchez takes a lively look at all the things that make us itch. The illustrations are fun and kid-friendly. This is a great title for reluctant readers and budding doctors and naturalists. Add it to your shelf!

Our entire family enjoyed reading this book aloud this Summer. Perfect choice for our school's reading list. All were entertained and learned something new.

Review

“Achingly effective.” —Booklist, Starred Review“Is Hemingway’s Paris ambitious? Yes. Does it work? Absolutely.” —The Huffington Post“By showing us the Paris that Hemingway saw, walked through, and loved, Robert Wheeler gives us a more complete picture than we have had of this legendary and complicated American writer." —Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and Director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University“This book evokes not only the beauty of Paris but especially of Hemingway’s remembrance of the early Paris years and his formation as a modernist writer. The exquisite photography and the evocative beauty of the prose bring out the very best of what Paris has to offer: past, present, and, forever, the future. Read this book and savor Hemingway’s city.” —James Meredith, President, The Ernest Hemingway Foundation and Society“Wheeler's photographs of Hemingway's Paris are a gritty illustration of what Perkins saw in Hemingway's writing.” —Jenny Phillips, grand-daughter of Hemingway’s longtime editor, Maxwell Perkins“In this photographic tribute to Ernest Hemingway, Robert Wheeler uses his unerring eye and masterly vision to bring us Paris, city of literature and romance, in a unique and charming way. Inspired by A Moveable Feast, the crisp black-and-white images and accompanying narrative give us an original insight into both beloved city and renowned author. A delightful experience!” —Valerie Hemingway, Author of Running with the Bulls: My Years with the Hemingways“If you’re interested in Hemingway or Paris, this book is a must read.” —Sun Also Rises (Blog)

There is probably a perception that Hemingway's Paris: A Writer's City in Words and Images, would be most appropriate for people who are interested in either Ernest Hemingway, Paris, or both, but I found another use for it. I was in Paris for ten days this past April and in spite of its heft I used it as a guidebook. While sipping a Lillet at Les Deux Magots I read about Hemingway stopping there and looked at the accompanying photo. (pgs 26-27). While sitting at one of the cafes on the Place Contrascarpe, I read about Ernest and Hadley's first apartment just around the corner (pgs 126 - 127) And a highlight was having dinner on the last night at the Closserie des Lilas and looking at the photos on pages 79 and 87, for example. I even showed them to the maître d' who was greatly impressed. You can join Ernest and Hadley in Paris through this book, but to take it there and almost reunite the photos with the places they show was a special treat.

The hardcover version is quite a disappointment compared to the softcover copy I almost purchased at my local bookstore. I thought the high quality, glossy photos that I previewed in the softcover edition would merit paying more to own as a hardcover "keeper" for my home bookshelf. My bookstore only carried the softcover, so I was happy to find a hard-bound edition offered on Amazon for only a few dollars more. However the photos in the hardcover version I received (printed in USA) were grainy, low resolution, poor white balance and contrast, and printed on thin recycled-quality paper. Even the text is grainy and the whole feel is that it was photocopied on a low resolution inkjet. Fair warning to anyone else who expects art-quality photos in the hardcover version of what is an otherwise enjoyable collection of photo essays of black&white Paris. Will return and replace.

I checked this book out at my local library. I instantly fell in love with the glossy pages and beautiful pictures. I decided to order a copy for myself. Upon receiving my book, the pages were not glossy they were matte. Some of the pictures have streaks and lines going through them. The worst part is that the pages are so thin that they are almost see through. I can turn the page and still be able to see the previous page.

This extraordinary book reminds me of the reasons I return to Paris again and again. Seeing his beautiful pictures through Hemingway's haunts only makes it more poignant. It is a treasure for anyone who loves Paris or Hemingway. For those of us whose lives have been enriched by both will certainly find an honored place in our library for Wheeler's contribution to our valued books about Paris and Hemingway!

Robert Wheeler's evocation of Hemingway's Paris in beautiful words and stunning pictures makes me want to revisit Paris to see everything through Hemingway's eyes. However, this book is just as rewarding for the armchair traveler. What a treat for everyone who loves beautiful photographs of one of the world's most beautiful cities! I particularly like the map to facilitate mentally following in Hemingway's footsteps. I was privileged to visit Paris with Robert, but his photographs capture far more than I saw by myself, and his words bring Hemingway alive again.

I love Hemingway and have followed his trail all over - Key West, Cuba, Paris, Spain, etc. My wife and I had just spent a month in Paris and I saw this book at Shakespeare and Company and had to have it. If you've ever read "A Moveable Feast", this basically follows that book on Hemingway's time in Paris. Beautiful pictures and beautiful writing.

I was captivated by the depth of feeling expressed by Robert Wheeler in presenting Hemingway's inspiration, craft, influence, and love of Hadley as he experienced life during his Paris years. The beautiful photography adds to, personalizes, and creates an introspective and sensitive look at and understanding of both Hemingway the person and Hemingway the gifted writer. You'll treasure and enjoy this marvelous insight into Hemingway that Robert Wheeler has created in his writings.

Robert Wheeler's Hemingway's Paris: A Writer's City in Words and Images is a rare, concise exploration into one of the world's preeminent twentieth century authors. Through superb black and white photographs, accompanied by beautiful prose, Wheeler encourages both the casual reader or the literary enthusiast to quest for more of Hemingway's writings, especially his early work in 1920's Paris with his first wife and love, Hadley. This book is truly a high quality work of literary art worthy of the great man it depicts!

This cannot be beat. Do I love all the cars posted? No. He puts at least a couple of cars, yearly, that have those horrible American bumpers from the '70s. Those things were a crime against humanity, IMO. But the rest, a '52 Allard for January and a Morgan three wheeler for February, this year. Just beautiful. I try not to look ahead. This is a Christmas present from my wife. She says it a perfect gift for a fussy guy, who is impossible to buy for, and has most everything that he wants. I look forward to it yearly.A fan and an owner of a classic myself.

Nice large size; very colorful.

"Filled with compassionate, caring stories by a wise healer and scientist, this book will appeal to all who are interested in understanding how children heal."―Lynn Ponton, MD, author of The Romance of Risk"This book demands and deserves attention from parents, educators, policymakers, courts, and therapists. Highly recommended."―Library Journal, starred review"Perry has learned a thing or two about how not to raise a prospective sociopath.... He makes a powerful case for early intervention for disruptive children to prevent adult sociopathy."―Booklist"In beautifully written, fascinating accounts of experience working with emotionally stunted and traumatized children, child psychiatrist Perry educates readers about how early-life stress and violence affects the developing brain. He offers simple yet vivid illustrations of the stress response and the brain's mechanisms with facts and images that crystallize in the mind without being too detailed and confusing."―Publishers Weekly"I have never encountered a child advocate with a better mind, a bigger heart, or a more generous spirit than Bruce Perry. This book captures the essence of his insights and the heroism of his actions on behalf of children who have encountered the dark side of human experience."―James Garbarino, PhD, author of Lost Boys: Why Our Sons Turn Violent and How We Can Save Them"For many years, Bruce Perry's work has been deserving of our highest praise. This book is his crowning achievement, the ultimate combination of science and humanity."―Joel A. Dvoskin, PhD, ABPP, University of Arizona College of Medicine, and President, American Psychology-Law Society"In this harrowing but profoundly humane book, Perry and Szalavitz provide an all too timely, utterly engrossing account of traumatized children's lives.... Once I opened it, I could not put it down."―Sarah Blaffer Hrdy, author of Mother Nature: Maternal Instincts and How They Shape the Human Species"The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog is Bruce Perry's finest achievement.... A friend who is in the field of child development introduced me to Dr Perry's work. I read a lot of psychology books, always hoping to discover deeper meaning. Often, authors will be repetitive about their findings. Dr Perry's explanations were not such. He gave various stories with explanations to include neurological findings. I couldn't put this book down, have ordered his other, and am now more interested in his lectures and the work his organization does in TX.I am a child advocate and found Dr Perry's book very helpful in understanding trauma and how relationship dynamics play a role in healing.I would love to see Dr Perry author a book specific to his lectures on how society plays a role and what we can do to make significant changes. He touches on this in the end; the breakdown of the family unit and how other countries successfully "have both highly productive economies and provide high quality child care and lots of paid family leave." It would be wonderful to explore his thoughts on this model on a deeper level. This book is a must for anyone in the field of child advocacy and psychology or trauma. But for parents especially! Although this book provides clinical and neurological explanations, it is easy to read without losing interest.

Bruce Perry is a psychologist with extensive study and experience in his field. Although many adults, arrogant parents in particular, think they know what is best for their children under all circumstances, Perry shows that by looking at parenting from many angles, it is possible to provide children with better environments, happier lives and more upstanding and productive lives as adults. As the old meme goes, when children see adults show kindness to animals and the less fortunate, they internalise these lessons and apply them in their own lives. Brutal and violent parenting, on the other hand, can lead to bitter adults that see everyone else as their enemies. Having never been shown trust, they assume that everyone else is as untrustworthy as the brutes that "looked after" them as children and teenagers.A wise young mother, Mama P, exemplifies the ideal maternal approach to parenting. Children need what they need, and they should not be put into boxes of "toddler," "adolescent," "teenager" or "male" or "female" and treated according to social mores and stereotypes. No qualified doctor would think of prescribing insulin to a non-diabetic. Some children, starved for affection by callous or simply ignorant parents, will fail to reach their full potential, even when it comes to something as basic as growth. Young children cannot simply become physically healthy adults simply by ingesting nutrients. If human contact isn't there, toddlers will remain short-statured and could even die from neglect alone. A study in the 1940s found that over a third of neglected infants simply die. This was described in great detail in Failure to Thrive: a Practice Guide by Chichester and published in the United Kingdom.Perry details several riveting case studies, including a young girl who was raped, children who were fortunately rescued from the Branch Davidian cult, and one victim whose mother abused him to gain attention (she suffered from Munchausen's by Proxy). The trauma recounted within will no doubt be difficult reading, but this is one of the most important non-fiction books in the 21st century. Finally, we have empirical evidence that demolishes any last hope paternalistic despots have of defending their style of "parenting." Caretakers can say "suck it up" or "learn to love yourself" until they're blue in the face, but such attitudes only lead to misery and destructive self-replicating spirals.Children need to be loved before they can learn to love themselves.

I can't think of any kind of person I wouldn't recommend this book for. If you're a parent or work with children professionally this is a mandatory read. If you, YES YOU reading this, are age 14+ I highly recommend this book for you as well, and I am extremely conservative about my reading material. The two cons I came upon were that a few pages in a later chapter was confusing to read, it rapidly went back and forth through the timeline when Dr. Perry worked with a particular patient. It was a bit confusing but not unmanageable, on the upside this section was brief. Secondly, I felt not that it was short, rather I could have read an additional 200 pages without losing the slightest interest on the topics discussed.

I wanted to read the "stories" the book is about 20% stories and 80% research and explaining how the brain is affected by trauma, studies conducted, examples, and so forth....I want to skim through a lot of stuff. Some of the information is actual interesting and can be useful, but I bought this under the presumption of being able to hear about the stories. Its more of an informational text...great for a class, not necessarily for MY leisure though, but I will finish it.

This book is intense but so beneficial for anyone who works with children. It gives you a new perspective on behavior. I think it would be good for anyone planning on having kids or with young children. I wish I had read this 30 years ago.

This book provides insight and understanding to the often confusing experiences and behaviors seen in pediatric trauma related behavioral disturbances. It is an encouraging read especially if you are in the position of trying to help a troubled child. I️ would encourage anyone dealing with children to read it as it will change your perspective and application of its paradigm will enhance your ability to help a child heal with the promise of a meaningful and rewarding future.

I have learned so much about how the developing brains of children are affected after experiences with trauma and/or high levels of stress. As an educator, this information is valuable and an important reminder to not treat every student as if they have had the same experiences at home. I highly recommend this book to anyone who interacts/works with children and anyone else who may be interested in the contents of this book.
