Chaos: Making a New Science by James Gleick is the story of how chaos theory was popularized in different fields of study.In Chaos, Gleick looks at how the science of chaos was developed. It's pretty interesting to follow how researchers in different fields somehow discovers how the theory is not as it seems. How simple systems are not just simple systems but can evolve into complex systems. And how these researchers through their curiosity and open-mindedness were able to see that perhaps there's a new paradigm and a new theory to be discovered.Unfortunately I don't think this book is very well written. The purpose and point of the book is quite hard to see. Does Gleick want to tell us about chaos? In that case the explanations are few and far between and when an explanation of chaos is attempted, it doesn't quite adequately explain it. Perhaps this is more to tell the human side of chaos? How recognition might not always come but the pursuit of truth is more important. In this case I am unconvinced as the structure doesn't allow that to come across. The book seems to be more about individuals and looks to be split up into small autobiographies. Finishing this book, I'm not really sure what it was I was supposed to get out of it. The most interesting point for me was how Kuhn's theory of scientific revolutions was exemplified but other than this I don't feel like I got anything else out of the book.This is then not a book about chaos theory. It's more a collection of stories of the people who helped bring about chaos theory and their struggles in doing so.

This book describes the beginnings of an important theory that explains many patterns and behaviors observed in nature that are not usually discussed in traditional science classes even to this day. It's not an easy read but the book's content is well worth the effort especially to those interested in science and how nature "works".I believe this book will be most rewarding to readers with knowledge of science at high-school & college levels, in particular readers that understand how equations/math are used in sciences to describe and predict the behavior of various systems/objects.3-stars for the prose. Gleick's writing doesn't flow and is often hard to follow. I can't say it was enjoyable read, most of the time I felt that I had to "extract" what he is trying to say by rereading certain sections.5-stars for the content, breadth, and depth. Gleick casts a wide net in describing how pieces of Chaos theory emerged from several scientific fields. He did a phenomenal job in researching the topic and immersing himself in technical details.Several keywords to take away from this book are : Chaotic systems, Fractals and Self-Similar patterns, Butterfly effect, Nonlinear systems,Dynamic systems, Bifurcating systems, Attractor. One example of how fractals appear in landscapes: [...].Chaos theory spawned several new subfields broadly can be labelled as Emergent Complexity.

This book was not bad and it tought me a thing or two, but I would have liked more math. It's 75% about 'the who's who on campus', I mean the history of scientists and their discoveries.

Very readable introduction to the field, an excellent popular account. I had read Mandelbrodt's classic on fractals when it appeared, but had not followed on developments.In this book, I liked the story-telling and didactic explanations. Should be a nice gift for youngsters interested in math or physics. A bit more explicit math would have been helpful; sometimes the author bends over backwards to avoid even simple formulae or equations, which might have been easier to understand for readers with college math than verbal explanations.I got interested and probably will follow on with more advanced material.The book may be a bit dated now, but not being an expert, I find it hard to point out specific items that should be added or updated. I am sure that a lot of things have happened after the book was published. I would also have appreciated a longer list of citations of the original publications.

an amaizng book. even for a non-science person like me, it was a great read. glecik has made the language so simple that i found each and every page interesting and understandable. this rates as one of the best books i have ever read in my iife. i have understood now the fact that most of the life we have lead or are leading, has to have a component of chaos in it, and it is alright not to fret over it.

Great read on the history of the emerging field of chaos theory as a loose multi-disciplinary field applicable to almost every discipline and yet adopted by no discipline as its own. The pioneers are as varied, free-thinking, maverick, and ostracized as the discipline itself. Approach this book from the standpoint of 'history of chaos science' rather than 'technical introduction to chaos theory,' as the work doesn't quite take upon itself to teach the reader the rigorous field of chaos theory even at an introductory level. It is a book for the lover of science for science sake and a qualitative introduction to chaos at that.

They saw regular irregularities in deterministic systems (locally unpredictable but globally stable) and built the intuition and mathematical tools to understand it. The adventure includes several paradoxes together with infinite food for thought. For example, a fractal plots infinity within a finite plan. What? We can see infinity!

I have bought dozens of technical/programming books over the last 10 years covering every topic on the Microsoft stack and this book rates as one of the best. The author has a great ability to teach you how to use the tooling to quickly create decent looking "real world" applications. I have dabbled in ASP.Net core and bought a couple of Core books before this one but wasn't able to stick with them cover to cover as I have this one. In fact I found it so helpful that I bought a physical copy to go along with the Kindle version I originally bought.Two things that I should note is that they have done something different with the code formatting in this book then I have never seen in any other Kindle book. The code is in color and is formatted like it would be in the book (although the book version isn't in color). It almost looks like an image of the code block was pasted into the text. But it is not an image because you can copy and paste into your editor. If you have ever purchased a ASP code book on Kindle you will know what a mess the code formatting usually is. I am hoping that all future programming books do the same thing. What a treat!The other thing to know is that the author has you use a third party tool to use in one of the tutorials, which between the time this book was finished and now the maker of that tool no longer offers a free version of it. I contacted the vendor and they said my only option was to buy a year subscription to try it out and they would refund my money if I requested it up to 30 days.There are a few minor code issues but they were easy to debug so no show stoppers there. Based on my experience I think that if you go into this book with prior (even just a little) ASP.Net knowledge you will have no issue learning how to build out a full Core web application with just this book.

This book teaches you from the very basics and takes you all the way to a complete (yet basic) functioning MVC website. Do yourself a favor first and learn C# well. I knew nothing about MVC, its terms and concepts before reading this book. It is a bit confusing at first because MVC has too many moving parts. Repetition is the key to learning MVC well. After trying out different books and online courses I can say that this is the best way to learn MVC.The book starts by teaching you how to setup the most important functions in MVC. It teaches you how to accomplish the essentials functions in an MVC website and how these design choices reflect on the folders that normally compromise an MVC application. You get to create the folders from scratch too, that way you know why they exists and how they work. It then continues teaching you the tools available to create websites in MVC. It is a simple but very effective and straight-forward approach that I think is ideal. There are some minor mistakes in the book though, On page 55 you are told to write a line of code using the NotImplementedException() command. Before you get to try it out you are told to delete it later and then view the page. I still haven't tried that command because I did not go back to it. On page 58 the book shows the wrong complete code for a "MockVideoData" class. This code corresponds to the next step in the exercise not the current one. It caused me a bit of confusion at first. Still, the mistakes are nothing serious and pretty inconsequential.I still enjoyed the fact that the book teaches you only what you need to know at first to get things done. It is easy to get overwhelmed by information about MVC and have a hard time making sense of it. If you are starting from zero on MVC, this is the book to get you started. After this, you should only have to learn CSS, JavaScript and (optionally) bootstrap and you should be able to create any website you want with asp.net core.

I'm new to ASP.NET Core 2.0, and was really learning a lot from this book up until chapter 8, at this point it started asking me to add "Bower" items to the project it has you developing. None of the examples were working, and upon googling Bower and VS 2017, turns out Bower is dead an no longer included in VS, so at this point I was unable to use the book anymore. I would recommend a different book if you are a newbie like me.

The content is well covered and easy to follow, just deep enough for developers new to ASP.NET Core. I also subscribed to the author's video course on Udemy.com, which is very good; it gets even more stars! The problem with the electronic version of the book, by no fault of the author I wouldn't think, is no table of contents for the Kindle edition for the Mac. That is annoying because I like to skip around to topics that interest me. I was going to just return the electronic version and buy the hardcopy but I haven't been able to find a link for returning Kindle books. It may not be possible.

As an "old" retired guy that left off with client server development using RPG - AS/400, Delphi / SQL Server years ago, I bought Learn C# in 1 day well which I needed to refresh and reference and ASP.NET CORE 2.0 so I can start programing in Razor Pages. OK, so I just completed the first chapter, slowly but surely. The book is fantastic helping me learn and understand. The way it's written - worded, first explaining what you will do, then gives you the steps to do, then a review of everything in a very concise, understanding and accurate way. There's some Chinese Tao proverb about tell me, show me, involve me and ASP.NET CORE 2.0 by Jonas Fagerberg is all of that...

This book provides step by step instruction while building out a complete website using Asp.Net Core. The author does an excellent job showing and explaining how all the pieces fit together. Excellent read, not dry or boring. I used Visual Studio 2017 to build out the website as I went through each chapter to help reinforce the material. I highly recommend this book for learning .Net Core 2.0.

From October 19, 2018 -- January 20, 2019, the Columbus Museum of Art presented a large exhibition "I Too Sing America" in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Harlem Renaissance. The precise dating and nature of the Harlem Renaissance is subject to debate, but it is generally thought to run from the end of WW I to the early 1930s. The exhibition has been combined with other activities in the City of Columbus celebrating the Harlem Renaissance. The commemoration of the flourishing of the arts in Harlem is a worthy project for any city to undertake. In Columbus, the project was the result of a collaboration which began in 2015 between the Museum of Art and Will Haygood who was born in Columbus. Haygood has written well-received biographies of several figures associated with Harlem, including Thurgood Marshall, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Sugar Ray Robinson, and Sammy Davis, Jr. As a native son, Haygood worked closely with the museum staff and curators on the content of the exhibition.Although I didn't travel to Columbus to see the exhibition, I was able to do the next-best thing by finding this new book based on the exhibition "I Too Sing America: The Harlem Renaissance at 100." The book includes many paintings, photos, sculptures, and artifacts shown at the exhibition and includes as well many items not part of the exhibition. The book also includes lengthy textual material. Haygood wrote the historical sections giving an overview of the Harlem Renaissance and its major figures. Scholars and curators at the Columbus Museum of Art wrote the sections involving the many artists whose works are featured in the book.Langston Hughes' famous 1926 poem "I, Too, Sing America" is presented at the beginning of the volume and gives the book and exhibition their theme. The book shows an extraordinary output of feeling and thought about the United States, Harlem, African American life, and the spirit of individual creativity. It shows the great cultural achievements resulting in part from the return of African American soldiers from the War and from the Great Migration to northern cities from the South. Many people will be familiar with some of the major figures, but most people will have their understanding of the Harlem Renaissance broadened and deepened by this book.Figures such as Langston Hughes, Adam Clayton Powell (father and son), Zora Neal Hurston, and W.E.B. DuBois receive substantial attention. But for me the heart of the volume was the images of the artwork. The book features many paintings by artists including Archibald Motley, Aaron Douglas, Allan Rohan Crite, Jacob Lawrence, and others. The reader meets gifted sculptors including Augusta Savage and Richmond Barthe. James Van Der Zee became a renowned photographer of the people and places of Harlem, and his work receives a great deal of deserved attention in this book together with a collection of African American vernacular photography taken mostly by amateurs. The illustrations show the gamut of life in Harlem from the streets and from the poor people to the buildings, frequent parades, tenements, and jazz clubs. The book shows a Harlem teeming with promise and with intellectual and artistic life. It is moving and inspiring. I learned a great deal about the Harlem Renaissance and wanted to learn more about many of the figures in this book that hadn't been familiar to me.In Haygood's words concluding this book, the Harlem Renaissance continues to sing. Not giving this short look at AIDS in Africa (and specifically, the experience in Nigeria, the author's home country) more than three stars feels a bit churlish. But however moving the individual stories it contains may be, the book itself is far from flawless.My principal problem with the narrative surfaced early on, when Iweala makes the case that the West has a difficulty in understanding Africa's AIDS crisis because we are blinkered by ages-old prejudices. Certainly, those prejudices exist, especially among those who have never spent any time in sub-Saharan Africa. But Iweala then proceeds to undermine his own case by showing that many of these preconceptions may have some basis in reality. For instance, he discusses the nature of sexual relationships as being more likely to be concurrent than consecutive (he talks to a man who defines fidelity to a girlfriend as cutting the number of his other girlfriends from eight down to four, and then only to one other woman, for instance.) Forget labels and judgments: as Iweala and the physicians he talks to for this book comment, that kind of approach is more likely to result in the kind of dramatic spread of AIDS that the world has witnessed in Africa. He doesn't want traditional African beliefs criticized -- and yet some of those, too, have negatively affected the lives of Nigerians with AIDS, as they are excluded from the community and shunned our of a kind of fear that AIDS is spread via some kind of miasma.Where does the line lie between the West patronizing Africans by offering assistance and offending them by not doing enough? Iweala refers to African HIV/AIDS activists and their belief that Westerners don't see African AIDS patients "as similar to ourselves and thus deserving of proper medical care." What popped into my mind at that point was the number of Americans I've encountered who view their fellow Americans (of any color) in a similar way: anyone imprudent enough not to provide for health emergencies isn't their responsibility, I've heard it argued. This is a human issue, not simply a West/Africa issue, sadly, although in the case of Africa it may be complicated by history. Still, it isn't specific to Africa; similar perceptions have taken root in Asia at times.I didn't expect Iweala to provide answers to any of these very difficult questions that lie at the heart of the relationship between Africa and the West -- but given that he raised them, I was disappointed he adopted what struck me as a narrower view. Had the core narrative been stronger, these issues wouldn't have niggled at the back of my mind as they did. Are the portraits of the Nigerians who are battling the disease moving and compelling? Absolutely. Are the tales inspiring. Certainly. Is Iweala's core message -- that we should see each other, positive or negative, African or Western, as humans first and foremost -- important? Without question. Of course we must work to cross these boundaries. But I wonder whether the people who will read this book and respond to that message have already accepted this? How many North Americans and Europeans -- those who are willing to listen -- are going to find that at all revelatory or fresh? Perhaps it's true, however, that some of those observations that I found to be self-evident -- that we all should help those struggling with HIV to simply lead their lives -- are those that bear the most repetition.What this book does do well is to provide readers with a compelling oral history of AIDS in Nigeria. The portraits of the individuals Iweala encounters are vivid and he does a great job of blending their stories with the necessary facts and figures. Nonetheless, Still, this book didn't accomplish nearly what it could have. By brushing away the difficult questions -- dismissing a CNN story of a town of AIDS orphaned children in Kenya as melodramatic (fair comment) and as being about Kenya and thus irrelevant because Africa is more than just Kenya (well, Kenya is a part of Africa... and the village did exist...) -- Iweala undermined some of what he otherwise accomplished in my eyes.This probably won't be a majority view, and that's probably just as well, as this is certainly a powerfully human book that deserves readers. Nonetheless, I remain underwhelmed.

I lost my best friend to AIDS in 1989, and I still miss him terribly. For years I was terrified of making friends with gay men for fear of losing them. I had lost three friends, and until the anti-retro viral treatments were available, I was worried all the time that other friends would be taken from me. After the cocktail that worked was readily available, my fears dissipated and now I have two friends with HIV/Aids who happily live their lives fully, without the fear (on their part or mine) that they will die a premature death. I've seen the fear it inspires, first hand, how some family members react and how miserable self-righteous prigs see this disease as a punishment from God. But, that was a generation ago. To read a book written today, that details all the crap people had to go thru who had HIV/Aids thirty years ago, as if it were breaking news, is mind numbing. I have known about the devastation HIV/Aids has caused to millions of people in different countries in Africa for almost as long as I knew about it here.Iweala wrote this book as if it's a relatively new phenomena that needs to be addressed. C'mon. Wake up. This is not new or news. What is important is how millions of people in Africa are denied treatments because of either cost or inaccessibility to locations that administer treatments (the latter situation wasn't even addressed in this book).There are snippets in this book that are compelling, but mostly it is dated material, poorly and very defensively written. Iweala constantly bemoans how we clump all the people and all the countries in Africa together and make grotesque generalizations. Make that point and move on.I did, however, love the title of the book. Essentially, it asks, who gets HIV/Aids. And the answer is: People like us. Viewing the crisis that way keeps us from treating those people who are positive as "the other".

I thought it would have more photos but it has nice chunk of text that I could read about.well designed book. I am a graphic designer, so I can't help with judging layout of books and printing.But this book is such a lovely book. Nice reference photos & enough text ! A masterful writer combined with a discussion of great artists, what a treat for someone who appreciates both.

I like reading about the art world and creativity and even if I didn't I would like to read what Janet Malcolm Writes about it. It was a nice surprise to find that one of the players in her art world drama had gone to my high school in Cincinnati and I always wondered what happened to him. The role of esoteric art critic in New York City seems to be a natural extension of who he was as an outspoken, rebellious student in an elite, college preparatory high school in the Midwest. I also find it interesting when anybody can make some sense out of the mishmash of what I view as the New York City art world. I believe Tom Wolfe is correct when he said that the word makes the message in the art world. It is not what you see is what you get it is what you see is formed by the art critic you are listening to about that piece of artwork.

I got bogged down in the VERY long essay about Artforum magazine, and I don't agree with Malcolm's enthusiasm for J.D. Salinger's writing (he's got a very narrow focus and his characters are really more petulant than anything else). But the David Salle piece which opens the collection (and furnishes its title) is a masterpiece.She also skillfully demolished the blowsy excess of the catalog of the SanFrancisco Art Museum's Diane Arbus exhibit, making the point that learning every last jot of trivia about a person does not contribute to understanding them. I will remember this line forever: "What Helen of Troy did in her spare time, and what she was "really like" as a person, are not questions that torture us."

Some people have complained here that these essays have appeared elsewhere and therefore are not "new." The truth is, most essay collections have work in them that has appeared elsewhere. That doesn't prevent this from being a riveting read. Even the ones I've read before, like the title essay, surprised me all over again. Janet Malcolm is a brilliant thinker, a cool and clear-eyed journalist, and a beautiful writer. All it takes is one paragraph before you know you're in the thrall of an authoritative, interesting voice and mind.

I love Janet Malcolm's writing style and prose and therefore can't be objective. This compilation has been fascinating. She continues to astound me with her perceptive voice and remarkable wisdom. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in the arts.

I love Janet Malcolm's work, just about every word of it, so I am unqualified to review this book. To me, reading each piece was like eating exquisite dark chocolate, superb smoked salmon, and so on: fill in the blanks with your own cherished tasty treats. I'm sorry, I just can't be objective about Janet Malcolm. But I can tell you which is my favorite: her write-up on the collection of characters (art historians, art critics, editors, and artists) who shed light on the enigma of _Artforum_ magazine in the 1980s. That may sound arcane to you, but for me, it's riveting material. She even makes Bloomsbury freshly interesting! Enough said.

Fascinating book that I will read again and again.

She is one of my favorite writers, offering such a complex, nuanced version of a story, making me think. This is a collection of essays and some of them are not so successful as her other books, but I was glad to read it.

I'm a new member to the Episcopal church and have wanted my own BCP. This ended up being everything I wanted it to be. It's about the same size as my travel bible so it is easy to bring along with me and the print isn't overly small until you get to the historical documents in the back. The only thing that would make it better would be a zippered binding to help preserve the pages but all in all, I am very pleased with it. It includes a section at the beginning for Baptism, Confirmation and Marriage and two bookmarks. It's a really beautiful book and the pictures really don't do it justice.

When I recently became a member of the Episcopal Church, I decided to purchase a personal copy of the Book of Common Prayer (BCP). I like everything about this wonderful book. It contains all of the Church’s liturgical prayers, including two rites of the Holy Eucharist, the Daily Office, and prayers for many special occasions. It also contains the complete Book of Psalms, and a list of Bible readings for every day of the year. I use my BCP primarily for my morning and evening prayers.My BCP measures about 7¾” x 5½ “x 1¾,” so it is a perfect size for me. It has a durable cloth-over-board hard cover that feels very solid in my hands. The binding appears to be sewn rather than glued, which makes it more durable and allows me to lay it flat when opened. The paper is smooth but not glossy, and of sufficient weight to make it reasonably wrinkle- and tear-resistant. The text is set in a font that’s very crisp, clear, and easy to read. The book’s page edges are not gilded, and there are no marker ribbons.I am very pleased with my new Book of Common Prayer. Although it is not a substitute for the Bible, which is the cornerstone of my Christian faith, it is a very useful guide for me in my daily prayer and meditation. Highly recommended.

I have two Kindle versions of the BCP, both the one by Episcopal Church and Christian Miracle Foundation Press (EC for short) as well as the one by Church Publishing (CP). I feel like they each have pros and cons, and I'm happy to have both. I'm placing this same review in both locations.I prefer the formatting in the CP; it's a bit cleaner. However, the EC includes the page numbers which, while it can be disruptive while reading, certainly helps me to find a particular page quickly.The Table of Contents in the CP is short and easy to navigate while the one in the EC is very long and takes forever to get through. So the CP TOC will get you to a general area of the book, while the EC TOC will get you to exactly the spot that you want. I don't use the TOC often because I just bookmark all the main spots that I want to get to quickly.One thing that I love about the EC is that in the Daily Office Lectionary, the Psalms readings are hyperlinked to the Psalter, making it very easy to move back and forth between the two sections of the book.Both books occasionally crash the Kindle app, but it does seem like the CP version does it more often.If I had to choose only one (which, realistically, I should have), it would be the EC version. I find that its pros outweigh its cons, and it's less than a third of the price of the CP version.

Paging is different than the original book, which creates problems. Page numbers are an important reference during the course of Episcopal servicces.

This book will be useful to Christians of many denominations especially those that celebrate Holy Communion (Eucharist) regularly and have traditional Christian observances like Ash Wednesday and the like. It is probably particularly appropriate for Methodists, Lutherans, Episcopalian, Catholic, Orthodox and Anglicans. The majority of the book is or comes from scripture. Much of the language and material from the original book of Common Prayer in 1549 has obviously been updated although the original statements are included. Many of the prayers are particularly thoughtful---see Prayer for the Church # 7 page 816. The copy I received is nice quality blue leather, two ribbon markers, quality sewn binding and gold gilt page edge.

Perfect for my moments of quiet contemplation and prayer. As an Anglican, I was given a copy of 'The Book of Common Prayer' by my church's reverend at my confirmation at age 15, back in 1995. She had written a short prayer inside and I used and cherished that copy greatly over the years, even to this day. Although I still have it for sentimental reasons, I purchased this new copy because it has nice, larger print and can handle more daily use of wear and tear. I hope to continue to use both for decades to come, and hopefully, pass both on to any future children I may have.

For me, this is the only version of the 1979 BCP to own. Excellent binding, and the pages lie flat. Also, the print size is perfect for anyone of any age.

Terribly disappointed and hope to get my purchase price refunded. This ebook freezes frequently, and apparently the psalter is not available at all. Navigation system is next to worthless. It would have been so helpful to have, in order to lighten the load. Bah humbug.

What a fun book of some great comic art! There's a few pages of Wonder Woman and then quite a few pages of many other characters, some I'd never heard of. I enjoyed reading all the interesting tidbit of info about the characters and comics. No regrets buying this.

This is a beautifully done book. Great pictures and well written. It’s a great gift for a woman in your life who digs superheroes.

Recently bought this, and it was definitely worth the money spent! Written by Louise Simonson(an accomplished comic book writer, for both Marvel and DC Comics), this is an illustrated guide to the female superheroines of past and present. Besides the well-known ones like Wonder Woman, Batgirl, and Supergirl, other lesser known characters are also spotlighted. Contains a number of full page reproductions of comic book covers(which look really amazing on the high quality paper of the book), and various other pictures.Definitely recommended for superheroine fans. :)

Came as described with light wear and tear, but it was hardly even noticeable! Couldn't beat the price though!
