From Booklist
When Good Morning America cohost Roberts was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007, she mounted a very public battle. Five years after completing treatment, she faced a rare bone-marrow disorder, likely caused by the cancer treatment, that again tested her strength and resolve, again in public. Following her mother’s time-honored advice to “make your mess your message,†Roberts offers an inspiring memoir of her life, from her home base in Mississippi to her home in New York and the glamorous though grueling life of a television reporter. Roberts prevailed through a painful bone-marrow transplant, with her sister as donor; the death of her mother; and her triumphant return to GMA after her medical leave, proudly wearing her bald head on air. With the infectious personality for which she’s known, Roberts details the support of family and friends and the people she’s met in her life and career who’ve inspired her by overcoming their own challenges with the “something†that everybody inevitably faces. Photos enhance this inspiring memoir. --Vanessa Bush

truly what I needed and just at the right time! Google has nothing in regards to a honest and downright behind the scenes, ugly truth and story of a bone marrow transplant. Thank your for your story and encouragment ans also giving us readers a peek at what to expect and how we csn cope, help and heal. Prayers and blessings to all of you out there gping through something similar. Im sitting bedside holding his hand right now and all smiles and encouragment because life is so precious, life is a gift! And this book gives you hope....exactly what we as people need more of!
Very inspirational. I could not put this book down. For someone to go through what Robin has and come out stronger than ever before, that is so inspiring. Going through breast cancer is hard enough and then having to go through a bone marrow trans plant?! I can't even imagine the strength needed to get through it.You are so strong Robin Roberts!
I just finished this book and I have tears in my eyes. My husband was just diagnosed with MDS and Acute Meyloid Leukemia and he is currently in the hospital preparing for a bone marrow transplant. Reading this book about Robin's journey through her MDS diagnosis and her bone marrow transplant was so important to me since me and my husband are going through the exact same thing right now. It is such a scary life or death life changing situation and it is so comforting to read about someone else's experience when they have gone through exactly what you are going through. Robin's story is truly inspiring and it has helped me cope with my husband's situation so much. Thank you for baring your soul Robin and sharing your life with the world. There are no words to describe how important this book has been to me. I love you Robin Roberts. I hope my husband makes it through okay like you have. :)
I really like Robin Roberts and Good Morning America so wanted to hear the "behind the scenes" take. Robin is pretty honest about her journey and even fessed up to some issues she had while on her journey. As a nurse who has worked in bone marrow transplant she left out a lot of the really grueling stuff that she went through.....probably so as not to discourage others from being afraid to go through a transplant. She does talk about her "girlfriend" openly but never refers to her as a "partner". I still don't understand why they live apart. Her journey is remarkable and the love and support of her family and her now deceased mom makes us all wish we'd had that kind of wonderful foundation. She also relates very well to readers lives and understands that we think we "know them" because we invite them into our "bedrooms" every morning. Well I know her a little better now.
For many years I have been dealing with an illness and because of it at times I have felt alone or lost. However something moved me to read Ms Roberts Book and I am glad I listened to the little voice that told me to do this. The journey I have been on and the journey I read that Ms Roberts has under took is a way to learn that no matter what your going through no matter what your "something" is you have to find a way to fight and a way to live and a way to have a life. Remember if you have an illness or if u know someone who is dealing with one make this a gift to them, as a way to help them on there journey.
This is a fairly short book covering a very specific time in her life, dealing with a second cancer. It may be more meaningful to those who are personally dealing with their own serious illness. I think there are some things she was able to experience that the average person just won't be able to relate to but I think the common take-aways from her experience are the importance of being an assertive advocate for your own care, the critical importance of a strong support system, and taking the opportunity to tell those who are important in your life that they ARE important every chance you get. I don't criticize her story or her telling it her way. The 4 stars merely reflects that I was hoping for a bit more expansive memoir and this is not that story.
I have not even finished reading this book yet and want to start reading it over because it is just like watching a movie, every time you see it you find something new. I want to find that something new that I missed. I am sorry for all the things that happened to her, but it is what made her, her. She is our Good Morning America Robin. I watched her every morning until I found out she had cancer because my Mom got it about the same time. The book is an excellent recovery and healing story. It keeps you up and well as Robin. She shows America how to do it. There are rough days, she minimizes them I think, but she focuses on the good days because that is what will get us through. And that is what will get all of us through in the end. I give it a whole hearted 5 stars
It was great to hear directly from Robin about all of the problems and horrible things that she had to go through with the breast cancer and then her diagnosis of MDS. Thank God her sister turned out to be a match and that she was totally willing to do the bone marrow transplant for Robin. I don't want this to sound like I thought what Robin went through was great, because it was a lousy thing to go through. What was great was the outcome and that she wrote this book to share all of her ups and downs in regards to the bone marrow transplant. She is truly a very wonderful person and I am so happy that things turned out good for her. It was sad that she lost her Mother during this, but Mama was watching from above.
