This is a wonderful book for anyone who is a native French speaker or wanting to expose their youngster to the French language. It is a smaller version then I remember the original English word and being- Which makes a couple of the smaller pages a little bit difficult to turn just based on the size. Not a terrible problem though… Still worth purchasing this book. 🐛

I bought this because my husband speaks French and is planning on getting a phD in French. English, I should say, is his native language but he has studied in France and speaks it fairly fluently. In any case, I purchased this for our collection that we're starting of French children's books. This is so cute! It's obviously a translation of the English text, but my husband said the translation is great and he smiled as he read through the story in French.I purchased the board book version and love the quality and size! It even has the holes in the fruit like the English versions I've seen. (Illustrations are the same, of course.)Highly recommend since we couldn't be happier with the product.

In general, I am not a big Eric Carle fan. Some of his books I do not care for at all, while others I do like. This one, however, I think is wonderful. It is my favorite of his books. I like how it incorporates the days of the week, different foods, and the life cycle of a caterpillar. I like that my toddler can learn all these things in French, and he likes being able to put his little fingers through the holes made by the hungry caterpillar. I think this is a GREAT book to have in one's French children's library. The only thing keeping me from rating it five stars is the quality of the binding. It appears to be very flimsy/cheap, and I seriously wonder how long it would last if I allowed my three-year-old to look at it on his own. I really wish Amazon would offer this classic in hardcover, or at least in a better quality paperback.

Good book, same as the English version. This is paperback not board book. But still good quality.

Growing up as a bilingual French speaker in an English speaking country is easier when you can at least read the same books as your friends, albeit in a different language.I like that my daughter can have different versions of the same book, so it doesn't look like mommy and daddy are doing everything differently, it's confusing enough that they don't speak the same language. But why is the English version a board book and not the French version?

I got the BoardBook, but it is more like paperback, very small, and extremely difficult to turn the pages, and they don't stay open. Especially the middle pages that are 'short' because they "accumulate" as you turn the pages. Definitely NOT recommended for young children, for whom a board book is designed to cater. My expectation was a french equivalent to the english version of the board book I borrowed from the local library, which my daughter LOVES! It's supposed to be BIG (at least 12 by 12) which thick cardboard pages that are easy to turn with small fingers and stay open on their own. Quite unfortunate. I returned it. :(

When I was a young child learning how to read English, I loved this book. The artwork was pretty and the story was fun and simple. The French version offered no disappointments! However, this copy is quite smaller than I expected, perhaps because I had a big hardcover copy when I was younger. This is a small, thin book; that should not matter, though. The content is superb as always.

I always loved this story as a kid. I was excited to get the French version for my 6-month old as we are speaking to her in French. The story is great. My only complaint was that both of the corners were bent upon arrival. It would have been nice if it had been more securely packaged.

This is an awesome art book for those into not only digital and traditional art mediums but for designers and graphic artists/designers and architects also! This book not only delves into the process behind making the movie but style changes in drawing and development of characters and sets as well. This book includes the sketches from even the brainstorming/thumbnail stage where nothing was hashed out just a small idea on paper sketched out in a matter of seconds. Then the evolution from there is defined and explained at each step all the way up to CGI modeled finished product images. It shows a ton of art from behind the scenes which some books well "art of" books have neglected over the last few years. This book surpasses the art of the guardians of the Galaxy ( a book that I loved btw) and is almost on par with the first art of iron man movie book (which to me is top 5 in art of movie books due to the depth of information and photos and most important production art the makers included in their book). This book is absolutely amazing and I highly recommend it. As an artist myself it is very inspiring to see processes of development such as was included in this book because you can see areas which show the inner workings of the artist mind, the hurdles they face in creating art for a big company like Disney and this part is key, the way that even the upper echelon professional artists still have to work out kinks in their work by going back to basics and working on fundamental art skills to get perfect work. This book shows that it is a long arduous process no matter what stage artist or what kind of artist you are. Five stars all the way.

Beautiful artbook for Disney's Big Hero 6I find this to be an interesting artbook particularly because of the environment designs. About half the book is dedicated to the environment designs which includes the city San Fransokyo, Hiro's house, the cafe, San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, Fred's mansion and the portal. The San Fransokyo is like a character by itself with its blend of architecture and aesthetics from west and east. It's fun to see how the artists create a populated city inspired by San Francisco and Tokyo.Cited by art director Scott Watanabe, there are also influences from anime films such as Tekkonkinkreet, Ghost in the Shell and Akira. Indeed when I look at some of the environment sketches, they remind me of sketches from the Tekkon Kinkreet anime artbook. The vibe is certainly present.Looking at the city's environment concept art, you'll be able to spot Japanese elements such as the tapered rooftops, Koinobori (carp-shaped wind socks), a Golden Gate Bridge lookalike with Torii design elements, signboards with Japanese typography, wooden curved bridges, cherry-blossom trees, etc. There are also major characteristic San Francisco elements such as the roads with very recognisable cable cars, sloping hills, Victorian-style houses, etc. There's an emphasis on function and a sense of feeling lived-in for the environments, so buildings aren't just designed to look cool. For example, city streets or Hiro's rooms are made to look a bit more messy or wonky. The second half of the book features the character designs for the heroes, villains and side characters. Again, there's noticeable Japanese influence in the designs. Early designs for Hiro shows off costumes that look like ninjas or even Patlabor. There are more pages for Baymax because he's has a big role. Go Go's hero suit reminded me of Tron and some Japanese toy/game/anime that I can't remember. The characters in their non-hero forms are pretty standard and do not stand out, but their hero costumes look quite good. Finally the last part of the book talks briefly about the cinematography used, such as lighting, the new Disney Hyperion renderer and colour script. There's a good amount of text included in the form of introductions for each environment and character, and quotes from the staff talking about the designs. It's a book solely on the designs, with nothing being mentioned about the movie's plot.Overall a nice film companion.4.5 out of 5 stars.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

My family loves this movie! My son is really excited over this book. It allows you to dive deep into the details of the movie's environments and how the director arrived at his decisions that ultimately became the final movie. It is a great book for anyone interested in the movie or just as a reference to gain insight and inspiration for your own concept art.

Absolutely gorgeous! I've already read it cover to cover three times, and I have yet to see the movie! If you're afraid of spoilers, that's okay because this book has little to no spoilers in it, so it's perfectly okay to read before you see the film. The art is absolutely stunning, and the format is like a comic book. For this being my first art book, I don't regret my decision at all.

Like most movie art books this one includes a highly curated selection of ideation, production, and final drawings/renders. A variety of the movie crew provide snippets of their experience and thoughts. A good read but it leaves me wanting a much more thorough book. A movie with the richness and detail of design of Big Hero 6 deserves a Bigger Book.

I was concerned at first when I bought this book because I didn't think it could measure up to how much I loved the movie, but it exceeded my expectations. There's tons of useful and fascinating information!!The cityscapes and environmental art works are absolutely stunning!!I love looking through this book again and again and it's also really useful to study from!10/10 would recommend!!

This book is amazing! Well, the movie is, so this book just follows up with gorgeous artwork and progress work. Love it. It's eye candy.

Big Hero 6 is one of my favorite recent Disney movies. I loved the animation style, so this book adds to my enjoyment of the movie with insights and artwork from the film. Just beautiful.

#170,160 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Regrettably, for me, this has been a long overlooked classic. I’ve read my share of the works of black American authors, such as James Baldwin, Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison and most recently, Ta-Nehisi Coats. Not having read Du Bois seems to have been the functional equivalent of not having read Homer.William Edward Burghardt “W.E.B.” Du Bois lived a full productive life which spanned the long era of “Jim Crow.” He was born in 1868, and died at the age of 95, one year before the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, in Accra, Ghana, as a citizen of that country. He was the first African-American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard. His writings reflect a thorough grounding in the Greek and Roman classics, with references that were – at times, frankly beyond me. His prose is temperate, the “outrage” is left to the reader to conclude when the circumstances are described in measured terms, which often fully acknowledges the faults and predicaments of his own race. As the introduction says: “Du Bois achieves in his text a rare combination of pathos and dignity, presenting a portrait of black culture that commands respect.” For many years he would teach at the Atlanta University complex, and writes fondly of the 100 hills of Atlanta, the trees, and the red clay soil of Georgia. His wry introspection is demonstrated in the opening paragraph, where he asks the subject question. The vast majority of these 14 separate but intertwined essays concern racial relations in the United States after the Emancipation and the year of publication, 1903. One in particular was not, which was reflective of his own experience, when his first-born son died in infancy. In the third essay he presents his arguments with Booker T. Washington, concerning the education of the Negro in “trade schools,” stressing the need for the classical education which Du Bois had, saying that they had “put up high schools and called them colleges.” “Mr. Washington represents in Negro thought the old attitude of adjustment and submission.” Washington asked them to give up three things – “Political power, Insistence on Civil Rights, and Higher Education of Negro Youth.” Du Bois was the one who insisted that all three were “musts.” Separately, Du Bois says: “for the South believed that an educated Negro to be a dangerous Negro.” From my own experience, Du Bois is only looking at a sub-set, since I would add that, in general, anyone who is both educated – and questioning in a substantive way – of either race, South or North, is considered both “dangerous” and “a trouble maker.”The Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, immediately established in the aftermath of the Civil War, and led by Major General Oliver O. Howard, from Maine, who Du Bois describes as: “an honest man, with too much faith in human nature, little aptitude for business and intricate detail” was another topic I was totally unfamiliar with. Du Bois describes the initiative of mainly white female teachers from New England as “the 9th Crusade” for their efforts in establishing schools in the South, for both blacks and whites, after the Civil War. When the Freedman Bureau died, Du Bois describes its child as the Fifteen Amendment to the Constitution. In other essays, he describes his experience as a student at Fisk University in Nashville, and his subsequent experience teaching in very rudimentary log cabins for black students, and how he was housed in the homes of the student’s parents. In another temperate essay, he enrages the reader with the story of my “namesake,” John Jones, a black who had serious problems, both North and South. In NYC, he purchased an expensive ticket to see an opera, was seated, enjoying the performance when an usher, every so apologetically explained that the seat had been previously sold, and he would have to move (he was seated next to a white woman, and her husband had complained). Of course we will refund your money the usher explains. Jones decides to return to his native South, where the people seem more honest in their bigotry. There is a telling scene where Jones went to see “the Judge” who claimed he had “done so much for your people,” but Jones makes the mistake of going to the front door, and is rebuked for bringing those “uppity” Northern ideas back home.By far the essay that was the most informative, and resonated the strongest was the one on Dougherty County, Georgia, at the west end of the “Black belt” in that state. In the 1880’s-90’s the population was approximately 10,000 blacks and 2,000 whites. Du Bois describes in detail the economics of growing cotton in that county, with its impact on the humans, and the mechanisms that were used to keep everyone in debt, and therefore under control (today, many a college graduate would understand well). Consider just one fact: Cotton was 14 cents a pound in 1860 and 4 cents a pound in 1898. In the early ‘70’s I would travel to Dougherty County on business on a monthly basis, and was utterly oblivious to these central historical facts. ‘Tis more than a bit embarrassing. And then there is the matter of those formative experiences with two of the progeny from Dougherty County, each living on a different side of what Du Bois would call “the Veil.” Further heightened embarrassment that I did not know. Better late than…6-stars for Du Bois seminal perceptions.

The Souls of Black Folk was written at a time when books still had the power to sway public opinion and move people - and that was definitely the motive. This book is not merely descriptive, or a dry recitation of facts, but a elegant treatise whose intent is to sway the policy of its time. In the simplest of summaries, Dubois is laying his argument for how both policies and individuals should be shaped by and for African Americans in the decades not long removed from the civil war. It can be a tough read, because approximately a century and a half later, many of the problems he addresses still plague our nation. Dubois was also an advocate for education, and it is also of interest how many of the arguments regarding education could still be made today as well. The icing on the cake is W.E.B. Dubois is a marvelously poetic writer whose work gives one a feel for late 19th century America, particular the south. The Souls of Black Folk never feels dry, but rich despite the difficult topics it raises, many of which are still valid.

The writing includes several dichotomies. Throughout the book a type of philosophy is expressed, noted by capitalized ideals, especially "the Veil" but also "Liberty" or "Progress", as if the man was introduced to ideas in a realm of more wealth and entitlement, perhaps a secret society, and such parts were not as soulful as the more basic and well-written descriptions of black people and their plight. Occasionally black people were called "shiftless" or "idle" which surprised me. It could be undetected by a casual reader because the book is written in a scholarly manner. However, revolting crimes of whites towards blacks or the general reality of black people of the time would be described in perfect clarity as well, even though the somewhat odd, "educated" philisophy remained interspersed throughout. Perhaps those notions helped him resolve himself as being educated, intellectual, maybe even wealthy as he rode in Jim Crow train cars, but it often seemed luciferian in nature to me, as if the wealth of the world had a right to know what "enlightenment" is or to experiment on humble human beings or use them selfishly to gain more wealth, which is obviously not enlightenment. This was a very interesting read because of the dichotomies presented, nothing felt better than the down to earth descriptions of the reality of the times, and yet this man's soul was affected by the philosophies he mentioned and all people are affected by the vast array of knowledge and choices, good or bad. Imagine this person's struggle to merely be considered a human. Slaves and recently freed people then lived a horrifying oppression, yet to me the souls of black folk are beautiful, no matter what is said.Mechanically the book is missing the last line. Now that is not a quality edition.

In these days of renewed uncertainty, when the social progress made seems precarious, it helps to see from where we've come. This book, a cornerstone of civil rights literature, deserves a fresh look. This was my first time reading it, to be sure, but I felt a deep and human connection with the world it describes. Not because Blacks face the same challenges as 100 years ago, but that the mentality of people on all sides seems to have changed very little; the problems have only evolved with time as social and legal progress has been made. Yes, I'm white, but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate the magnitude of struggle. Many passages in this book are painful to read. Du Bois' writing at times approaches the level of poetry and abundantly conveys what he aspires to in his title. It's really hard for me to pick a favorite passage, but the last chapter wouldn't be a bad choice. I also liked the touch of beginning each chapter with a poem and snippet of melody. If you haven't read it, you should; if you have, then read it again. The words and historical memory are needed more than ever.
