Rekdal covers her mouth around the Chinese women, too embarrassed to admit her lack of knowledge in speaking Chinese. Even with those who look the most like her, she comes to the realization that “we do not live here. We are only visitors.”In her poetic and charmingly sarcastic way, she grapples with what it means to belong, with what it means to “fit in.” She must find her place even though every “place” rejects her. Her words, each chapter could be a lyrical poem, capture the reader’s attention and emotion. Rekdal brings them on a journey of identity crisis and, as beautifully and swaying as her form and diction, shows them the sometimes turbulent, but remarkable process in finding one’s self. Her hurt, pain, joy, happiness, confusion, frustration, love, and finally recognition and acceptance bleed through the pages and into the readers’ heart. Rekdal’s The Night My Mother Met Bruce Lee, in today’s political and social climate of deciding who and who doesn’t belong, is a very pertinent masterpiece.

Well, you have BOTH Ha Jin AND Arthur Golden praising it on the back cover--what can you expect? (I like one and not the other). While the cover made me think that this was going to be a "wacky," irreverent account by a young, half-Chinese woman, the book is instead an extremely well-written, thought-provoking colletion of essays. Rekdal is a poet, and it shows in her evocative descriptions, in her lyrical passages, in an effortlessly beautiful line. Rekdal pulls it off without being narcisstic or excessively introspective; the book succeeds brilliantly. Though the essay's topics are somewhat disjointed--they go from America to Korea to China to childhood, etc--the disconnected structure seems to be part of the point: as the subtitle suggests, these are "observations on not fitting in." I liked her juxtaposition of the uncanny, the frustrating, the disappointing things along with the beautiful, the personal, the "mini-epiphanic" aspects.And yes, she is also very witty. The humor is very sharp. I found myself laughing hysterically at an Elvis reference and I normally don't find him amusing. Finally, as someone who also spent a year in a small city in Korea, I was delighted that she related experiences that I shared myself when I taught high school students in South Korea.

There are always stereotypes to be stripped down, aren't there?Rekdal's themes (race, how Americans are perceived overseas, how Americans perceive each other) make you think, but her writing won't make you struggle. Her essays, built around episodes of her life, are sad, funny, entertaining and insightful.An excellent book. Highly recommended. I wish I could teach a course called "Race in America" just so I could get more people to read this book.

This highly original book is refreshing for its insights into a topic that has been discussed inumerable times in the news media. Ms Rekdal reflects upon mother/daughter relationships, racial and sociological problems, all without preachiness.

Ms. Rekdal's numerous observations are personal and touching. Many Americans have struggled with an identity crisis. I understand fully the crushing power of long and brutal silences mentioned in the text. I am so glad that Ms. Rekdal is not silent at all.

This is an interesting concept. A death bed promise made by a grieving husband and a best friend, to marry each other. After the funeral the husband took the baby son and went to stay in another community with his family for awhile.The best friend, Greta, continued life ad it had been, but always wondering if she and Isaac would follow through with the promise. Meanwhile, the young man working her father's farm land is showing interest in her.I am looking forward to continuing this story to see the outcome. I am not sure that I would be able to fulfill such a promise, knowing the other didn't feel love.

What happened? I knew I should have read the reviews. It was only because of my bad habit of checking the back of the book after getting a little bit into it that I discovered this is a serial story. The nice thing about Kindle books is that you don't have to wait until you can get out to get the new one, but it has discouraged me from finishing or continuing on in the series. The story has potential though if you don't mind this story form.

I can't imagine having to make such a promise as Naomi and Issac did before Betty died. But, the love Naomi has for the baby, hopefully the marriage will work out. I am looking forward to reading the next book

Good story. Beautiful writing. But the book stops and you have to buy more story. I won't purchase any more from this author. I'm looking for a complete book. I feel cheated by the author.

Greta is tested in this book in the trilogy. The grace with which she handles life's ups and Downs is an inspiration. It is a part of me that I need to develop!

Book 2 leaves you wondering if it will happen. Problem is, I like the other guy! Gee! It isn't open ended. I am off to read the next one.

Really enjoyed reading about the characters and the storyline. Held my interest throughout the book. Look forward to more by this author.

As a big fan of the Panerai brand, I found in this book the perfect blend of art and information- a true reflection of the tool watch it is dedicated to covering: form meets function. Filled with striking photographs of some amazing timepieces, the book also gives a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes at the factory, showing photos of some of the watches going through the rigorous tests they must pass before being sent to their final homes. It's great fun to see those who have never heard of the brand peruse the book, and instantly become enamored with the huge watches with the funny crown guard. All of a sudden, the conversation turns from 'what is that?', to 'where can I get one?!' Overall, this book is for and by those who are passionate about the brand, and find in a utilitarian tool, a true piece of art.

Very detailed. A nice coffee table book.

This is a huge heavy book--your typical "coffee table" book--in size. The good news--it provides an adequate history of Panerai, with some interesting pictures to accompany the text, pictures of the major players in the company, pictures of the various sea-related pursuits the watches were originally intended for, over the course of the many decades that Panerai has operated, and a few pictures of a few watches, and their parts over the years. Here's the bad news--it isn't worthy of occupying space on your coffee table, or your book shelf for that matter--there just aren't enough PICTURES to make it worthwhile. You can do a web search for "Panerai" using the engine of your choice, click on "images" and you will see more and generally as good or better pictures of the various Panerai watches that have been produced since the company's inception. I love Panerai watches, and currently own two of them. I frequent various watch forums on the web, and am always eager for more information, and more "eye candy" (pictures of Panerai watches). This book was an incredible disappointment--a complete and utter wasted of money. The text is really too short to stand alone as a good historical piece, and the pictures are too few to be of any real significance to anyone. I hate to say this, but you can see more, and learn more, just by going to the Paneristi site and looking at their photo threads. Why waste your money on this book?

Great book, lots of photos that are covered elswhere, but it is nice to have it all together and to read the whole story, especially how modern Panerai’s re-started. (the story about the production before and after WWII was covered many times over)

When you think of a 'coffee-table' book, large and impressive, you are thinking of a book the size of this book on the equally impressive-sized watches, derived from diving watches. Simple, stunning and beautiful as the subject, this book will make you love your Panerai wristwatch even more. Here are photographs in vivid detail, beautiful shots and historical information on the brand. This is my favorite watch photography book by far!

Purchased this and the Hayes book at the same time. The book provides useful maintenance and repair information but I think the Hayes book does a little better job in presenting the information. I received the book quickly and in very good condition.

I haven't used the book for much more than a tune up (plugs,wires,cap,rotor) but I found it was very detailed and easy to understand. So far seems like a great resource. Only down side would be the font (just a little hard to read sometimes) other than that I recommend this.

I have many of these books covering different manufacturers, models and years. Provides well written, clear instructions for the do-it-yourself home mechanic. I got what I wanted in a timely manner. And my Ford F2500 is working again.

Very helpful book, it has helped me fix a multitude of things in my truck. I even replaced the engine in it and this book helped alot.

Prefer the other manual to work on my truck this is a nice back-up to cross reference for difficult jobs.

Let’s face it. Intimacy is a complicated, sensitive, trial-and-error endeavor. AND it's a critical aspect of a happy marriage. Most Latter-Day Saint couples have no experience prior to marriage and learn by a lot of trials and many errors (mostly in expectations and communication). And most self-help/technique manuals make people uncomfortable as they seem to be borderline pornographic with the accompanying photos.As the parents of one married and another soon-to-be-married child, this was an unexpected find. My wife and I read it and learned new things. It is written in a frank, clear, and non-offensive way (there are sketches of anatomy and photos are of poseable wooden artist mannequins interacting.) There are relevant quotes at the beginning of each chapter from younger and older couples provide context to the topic being discussed. This added credibility for me because how else is a reader to know that others struggle with a particular issue -- this isn't something you can easily poll your peers on.I was surprised at the research that went into this and how comprehensive it is. Would strongly recommend for anyone, but especially new couples starting out!

This book spoke in such a matter-of-fact way; and radiated an attitude of normalcy. And it encouraged 'learning' together, what works best for each individual couple. (That requires patience and communication, vital qualities to every facet of a marital relationship!) I have been married for over 50 years, and feel pleased to realize how we somehow managed to get things right, for us, most of the time. It was thought provoking to wonder why such helpful books were not available back then, when we were newlyweds! I intend to give this book to each of my grand-children, when the time is right, as they approach marriage.

Great book for the person who is very physically active. My son loves this book.

I was expecting more, new information on LMT biomechanics. While the book is well laid out, presents itself with colorful and attractive photos and diagrams, it didn't provide me with any new information. Just more of the same antiquated info taught in massage school. Disappointing.

This guide follows the same effective format as the other Like Prep guides. It starts with the basics of how to write an essay then gives the reader/writer sample questions to practice. This one however, gives 120 practice questions!

The book was very explanatory and easily to read and understand. Great for SAT and other college entrance expectations. I do recommend this book to anyone preparing for exams or want to learn more of the basic skills of writing.I received this book in exchange for my honest review.

This is the only LSAT study book I've purchased, and I'd say it's worth it to buy a used copy. I really just wanted to learn the diagramming strategies, and it gave fairly clear explanations of those. I also thought that the pace at which the question difficulty increased was good. I worked through the whole book in about 4 days (maybe 14-16 hours). I think I made a good selection, and don't plan on buying another book (just previous tests for practice). However, there are several outright errors in the text as well as some things I thought were very poorly explained. Details follow:First, if-then statements are introduced in Ch. 5 (pages 85-6 in the 2010 edition), and the author makes several explicit references to formal logic. However, it isn't until page 254 that the author notes in an aside that if-then statements on the LSAT are not actually treated the same way as they are in formal logic. (In formal logic, the truth-value of an if-then is automatically T whenever the antecedent is false. I still don't really understand how if-thens are treated on the LSAT, because the book's explanation leaves me confused as to how if-then is distinguished from iff. I'm not sure whether that's entirely the fault of the book or if it's because I'm so accustomed to formal logic.) This lack of clarity made some of the examples and the corresponding explanations of the answers extremely confusing; for example, on page 90, formal logic would dictate that all of the answers could be true, though apparently only one is.Second, I'm fairly certain that the "Rank and File" game on pages 208-210 is not set up properly. I worked through the second question (top of 210) multiple times on different days and arrived at the same answer each time, but that answer wasn't one of the options. I then guilted my older brother (a math prodigy, pretty much, and also familiar with formal logic) into spending 10 minutes of his Christmas break working through the whole problem. All I told him was which question I was having trouble with, and he arrived at the same conclusion I did: the reasoning in the walk-through of the answer is simply flawed (specifically, "If Ursula were the fifth of these, then Violet also wouldn't be ranked, which is a contradiction." First, Ursula would be the fourth, not the fifth; second, neither of us could see anything that would make that a contradiction, even with the different if-then meaning). Again, we both identified that same line as the issue independently.Finally, while I didn't happen to note the page (or even the chapter), there's at least one question that has a typo in one or more of the answers (one of the "chips" is listed twice, and it wasn't intended as a trick to disqualify the answer; it's simply wrong).All that said, I found the book to be very helpful overall, and I'm glad to have the three full practice sections to work through in addition to all the examples. If you want to be really optimistic, you can pretend that the errors in the book are a source of fun, extra practice as you second-guess the explanations the author provides. If that rings too hollow for you, comfort yourself with the fact that most of it seems accurate, and there are always actual LSAT questions to rely on for practice instead of the ones the author came up with, so it's still worth it to buy a used copy.

This book is AWESOME. Coming from someone who did not understand logic games at all, this book easily taught me. The book goes very slow and takes you step by step each kind of logic game that the LSAT offers. It even has sample games with answers in the back of the book. I really actually grew to enjoy solving the games because of this book! Highly recommend!

The methods this book teaches are not the easiest to use in my opinion. The Manhattan prep books are the best. This book is all right but will leave you only partly prepared and when you use another book to supplement, the methods will be different and confuse you even more. So just start out with a good and exhaustive book from the start.

The book gives very logical and clear explanations. The author presents the material in an easy-to-follow format. Be aware that the book has several typos, but these are fairly easy to see. There is one error worth mentioning:Page 155, Solution to Game 3(MISTAKE 1)First H is (correctly) attached to B; suddenly it's (incorrectly) attached to P.(MISTAKE 2)On the continuation of explaining this game on page 157, the answer provided says that the possibilities are:FBPSHDGBFDPSHGBDFPSHGDBFPSHGThe problem clearly states that F always comes before B ("He goes to the bookstore sometime after the florist..."), so this is obviously incorrect. The correct answer is:FBPSHDGFBDPSHGFDBPSHGDFBPSHGOther than that, the book is actually very well-written. It breaks logic games down for you. Other books I've seen just give examples and explanations, but seem to not really give you a set of tools for solving the games. This book will give you a method to solve every problem.

I bought this book because I am awful at logic games and wanted a way to improve on them without paying for a class. I found that the book is inconsistent in some ways, such as how to symbolize facts about each game. Further, the author does not sufficiently explain how he arrives at his conclusions and makes the deductions that he does. Either my logical skills are really subpar or he does not explain thoroughly enough. I ended up buying the ExamKrackers Analytical Reasoning book and have been much more satisfied. I would highly recommend that book instead.

I found this book to be very helpful. In many ways, I found the problems in this book to be harder than the problems encountered on the actual LSAT.

After reading "LSAT for Dummies" and trying a few official LSAT prep-tests, I knew that I needed an organized strategy for solving the Analytical Reasoning questions. This book was exactly what I had hoped! The author categorizes the games into two basic forms and then develops the strategies by adding more complex rules in subsequent chapters. A section at the end of the book is devoted to possible games that are less common. I highly recommend this book because it is incredibly helpful for a reasonable price!

This was the hardest section of the LSAT by far for me. And this book breaks it down into small, easier to manage lessons and it really helped me improve.

Are you struggling getting motivated with the national boards process?! If so this is your go to book! The first half of this book changed my life and I'm not finishing up the NB process without buying this one too. It will make a world of difference especially if you do not have a lot of people to work with through the process. It can be hard to stay motivated and sometimes when you read the NB directions it all can be very confusing. This author does a great job breaking things apart and helping you keep the focus. Buy it, I promise you won't regret it. I'm a high school counselor in NC and if you live in NC you will get a large raise if you have completed the NB process. It's about the only way to keep moving forward professionally with higher pay.

I used the previous edition to help me with components 1,2, and 3, so I was extremely excited about this book. Now I'm working on Component 4 and I just didn't find this book very helpful. I could have used it for Component 3, but there is not as much for the last component.

I am completing C4 and this was not helpful to me. Maybe if I were also completing C3 it would have been helpful, however I did 1,2,3 last year.

Oh man. I love this book. I'm in my second year of going for National Board Certification, and wish that I'd bought this book last year. Might have passed! Excellent tips on components 3 and 4. You can't go wrong here. I'm grateful.

This book is extremely helpful! The author breaks down the confusing portfolio requirements and puts them into simple language while also providing great writing tips. Definitely worth purchasing if you are working on Components 3 & 4!

I found out today that I achieved National Board Certification- I purchased both of Bobbie Faulkner's books and I am certain that without them, I would not have become a NBCT. The books are short and to the point- user friendly and they are the only resource I had during my two year process. I recommend these books highly and they are well worth the cost.

An Excellent Resource!!! Since I will be working on Components 3 and 4 this upcoming school year, I feel that having this book now has really provided me an outline of what to focus on so this summer so that when school starts, I can hit the ground running! I highly recommend this for anyone beginning their National Board Journey!!!

THESE are a GODsend when working on NB! They are QUICK and to the point with just the information needed! and I passed all 4 comps in first try!!!! But remember you gotta KNOW your standards and make sure everything you do is FOR the STUDENTS!!!! :) Good Luck!
